Recommend a good Vet

towner609's picture

Can anyone recommend a good vet? My dog has been throwing up for the past two days. We have tried giving him chicken and rice. He ate the chicken but left the rice, and then he threw up the chicken. I saw an ad in the Spirit or Star for a Vet who makes house calls. Has anyone ever used this Vet?

You are probably talking about Dr. Pickard with Allpets Housecalls. We've started using his services just in the last year as we found it increasingly difficult to get our older dogs into a vehicle and then dealing with the stress of the ride to and from the vet's. Dr. Pickard is quite thorough and appears to carry just about everything he needs with him. He's very nice and respectful of the animal's stress of having their territory invaded. He calls before the visit if he's running behind and his prices aren't overly expensive considering that he's bringing the office to you.

We have several neighbors who are unable to take their pets out who also use Dr. Pickard as their vet. I haven't heard anything bad regarding him and his practices. I would say for the common ailments and maladies that happen everyday, Dr. Pickard is quite resourceful.

I know some people are not

I know some people are not crazy about them but I go to Society Hill Vets. They can be pricey but I have had nothing but positive experience there and my dog isnt even scared when we go there. Shes very metal though so that might explain that.

I have used Dr. Pickard for,

I have used Dr. Pickard for, gosh, I think almost 15 years, since he first started and he is absolutely the best!

Just note he doe snot have an actual office so you will get an ansering machine and he will call back in a day or so, If it is an emergencey, tell him about the conditin and I have alwasy found that he was able to squeeze us in. Also if he is away he always puts that on his machine..

Good Luck and I hope you dog is feeling better soon!

I would also suggest you try

I would also suggest you try a salt free chicken broth....it is ok if it has salt as long as your dog is drinking water fine but you don't want him to get dehydrated. This will help keep him from loosing all strength if he is having trouble keeping things down until you can get ahold of the vet. You can always go to Girard Animal - Cindy is great!

We have gone to the U Penn

We have gone to the U Penn Veteranary Hospital in West Philly. They're great as well. And they have an emergency room. Good luck with your doggie; I hope he feels better soon.

I put a call in to Dr.

I put a call in to Dr. Pickard around 8am this morning. My Female Boston is very sick and hasn't eaten in 4 days.. She may have eaten a poisoned house mouse and is vomiting a clear soapy substance.. I know she ate some lavender herb plant but I don't know if this is hurting her..Does anyone know how long it takes for Dr. Pickard to return a call..I have no way of getting my dog to a vet and desperately need a house call..

Call a cab or call a friend and get your dog to a vet now. Usually rodentcide poisoning is indicated by lethargy, pale gums, bloody stools/urine, nosebleeds - however if you suspect it, I would get the dog to a vet ASAP. If it is rodentcide, she may only need a vitamin K shot. Or she may have a completely different problem then what you suspect.

A vet would be better to advise you then anyone on a message board.

She is also in real danger of becoming dehydrated.

If money is a problem, you can go to the SPCA clinic on Erie ave, as they are a low cost clinic. However, if this were my dog, I would be at UPenn right now. Thats what credit cards are for.

Hi...Just a update on

Hi...Just a update on "SUGAR"...We called Dr.Rude and told them our predicament..They were able to set us up with a cab driver who would let a pet in his cab.. We sort of cancelled out the poison theory and it's possible that she has a uterine infection and we will get the blood test results back tomorrow. They gave her a very thorough check-up 300cc of saline..penicillin, and a lot of other drugs I can't even pronounce..We were able to bring her home to her sister and hopefully things will improve for her..She seems a little spunkier already..
Thanks to all who responded...

I am glad that Sugar seems stable. Is she dripping any fluid from her "lady region?" When was her last heat cycle?
I will hope that it is not Pyometra, as it is very serious. If it is that, I assume the Dr. told you to expect an emergency spay.

The saline will have re-hydrated her, and is prob why she feels better. Please let us know how the lab work comes back, and how she is doing. Good luck!

It sounds like it could be a closed-cervix Pyometra case. Please let us know how it goes at the vet. Good luck to your girl.

Hi All...It has been quite

Hi All...It has been quite awhile since I've been here and I'm sorry to all of you who showed concerns over our dog Sugar.. Well it turned out that a couple of days after I posted these message we rushed her to the Pennsylvania Animal Hospital where she had emergency surgery to have all her innerts removed..She almost didn't make it but pulled through with flying colors..Feb.14th will be one year from her operation.. The care they gave her at the hospital was fantastic and we managed to get a extension on her life.. George
