Kevin is an old friend of mine since grade school. Even though I am bald headed and shave my own head over the toaster once a week, I'm happy to hear people singing Kev's praises.

Kevin's Barber Shop

A lifelong Fishtown resident, Kevin Mulholland has been cutting hair locally for over 18 years. Which is pretty impressive, considering he’s only 31.
“I started doing haircuts for my buddies in my bedroom when I was about 13,” says Mulholland. “By the time I was 15, a had a barber chair, a hot lather machine, a straight razor…everything. It was like real barbershop right there in my parent’s dining room.”
Pretty soon, he had people lining up at his parent’s house at Moyer Street and Columbia Avenue for his $5 dollar haircuts.
After graduating from Roman Catholic High School, Mulholland took his father’s advice and went straight to the Joseph Donahue International School of Barbering Hairstyling in Northeast Philadelphia.
By 18, he had officially graduated from the guy cutting hair on Columbia Ave. to the status of a professionally licensed barber.
For the next 13 years, Mulholland honed his skills cutting hair for another barber along Girard Avenue before moving on to a new shop on Walnut Street in Old City.
But last September, Mulholland brought his cherished haircutting style back to Fishtown with the opening of his very own shop — Kevin’s Barber Shop, located at 600 E. Girard Ave.
And boy is he glad to be back.
“You know, I thought I’d be busy, but I didn’t think it’d be quite like this,” said Mulholland. “It’s great. A lot of the guys whose hair I used to cut, they’re 35 now and they’ve moved away, but they still come back all the way from places like Yardley and Bluebell.”
He thinks the loyalty comes, in part, from his old fashion practices and tendency to pamper customers.
“You would think only women would want to be pampered, but a lot of guys like the straight razor shave, the hot lather, and the warm towels,” jokes Mulholland.
And, while he does do a lot of traditional barber styling, Mulholland — still young enough at heart to keep a Bob Marley poster hanging in his shop — also gets plenty of younger guys who prefer the tighter styles.
“I think what people appreciate, no matter who it is, is that this place is not run like a machine shop where you’re just in and out,” said Mulholland. “I take pride in what I do, and I don’t mind taking the time to talk about what is going on the neighborhood.”
You might think Mulholland’s experience, top-notch treatment, and attention to detail come at steep price.
But at $12 a cut and $10 for kids and seniors, Kevin’s Barber Shop offers all that at a competitive price.
“It can be tough sometimes trying to pay the bills and put my daughter through St. George’s, but it is always worth it,” said Mulholland, who lives on Columbia Street with his wife Kathleen and 10-year-old daughter, Sarah. “My parent’s always did what they had to do to get by, and so does every one else in the neighborhood, and I respect that.”
Kevin’s Barber Shop is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday is by appointment only. Call 267 768 9331.

Kevin is the perfect barber:

Kevin is the perfect barber: fast, efficient, and great with kids -- not to mention one of the nicest, friendliest persons I've met in Fishtown yet. How nice to have two good barbers in the neighborhood.

I mentioned the news article and he asked if I would post that the phone number is actually:
