East Kensington Folks: HELP!!!

jason's picture

I've ranted before about the Harbison Dairy building on the corner of abigail and coral. It's the cold storage warehouse for Cousin's grocery stores. My previous rants were about Cousins buying up lots for next to nothing through shady city connections (FUMO).

However. Now the issue is the trucks. Everyday dozens of tractor trailers come down susquehanna avenue and make the left on coral. This morning a truck hit my neighbor's car, for the SECOND time in a month. Then the driver tried to flee and nearly ran over the owner of the car. It was dramatic, but really made me want to do something instead of just complaining.

Besides hitting parked cars, these trucks also have destroyed the storm drains and sidewalks on the corner, turned an empty lot into a muddy mosquito haven, idle for long periods (sometimes all night) spewing diesel smoke into the air, and generally hurting the neighborhood just by their presence.

I could go on and on, but what we need to do is contact our council people.

any help would be appreciated!

You really should take a day

You really should take a day and hide a video camera and tape them. Thats the only way.

I'm just curious if you've talked to anyone at Cousin's about your concerns? i'm not sure if they're willing to be responsive to your concerns... but i'd expect a responsible business owner would appreciate hearing your concerns first before a public official comes calling.

Good luck!

ha ha. kenzo the funny thing

ha ha. kenzo the funny thing about you saying "sniper" is that I think they used that roof when they filmed that movie "Shooter" last year!

oh and as far as Cousin's being responsible, that's the problem, I don't think they ARE responsible business owners, at least not the guy who runs the warehouse. If you confront him about anything, he changes his story. He told me that he was buying lots on the block so he could expand his truck parking lot and possible get a curb cut from susquehanna ave to abigail.

when I informed him that there's no way that's going to happen because the residents wont allow it, he quickly changed his story and started telling me that he actually wants to build really nice houses on the lots.

and before anyone accuses me

and before anyone accuses me of inflamatory statements against the business, I DID say "I don't think" before my statements. so it's just an opinion.

:)

Just wanted to mention that

Just wanted to mention that these trucks have been responsible for the traffic light at susquehana and frankford being knocked down at LEAST 3 or 4 times this year, and they just squashed the one way sign at coral and susquehanna last week. I KIND OF fixed it, but now it's about 2 feet shorter.

I still say video taping is

I still say video taping is the way to go. Get out there one morning. Bust them a few times and they will stop.

jason's picture

slimmer. WHO would I give

slimmer. WHO would I give the video to though? The police don't seem to care, and I'm already talking to councilmen, but nothing has resulted yet.

simmer's picture

First off, its Simmer. Just

First off, its Simmer. Just kidding. Second, if you video tape them damaging cars, property (either private or public) the police HAVE to show up. The problem now is its your word against theirs. Youll say they hit something and they will deny it. But if you have video and they hit a car, call your insurance company and tell them. If they hit someones property and they have home owners, call the insurance company. If they hit public property, call the police and tell them you have it on tape. They might tell you to bring it to the station but thats cool. If yuo call the insurance companies and tell them you have video, you better believe that they will send out a rep, get the video and go after the company. Sic the insurance companies after them. Id be at my window every morning with my video camera. After that, it will stop. And if for some reason it doesnt, send it to the news. They are always looking for news like that.

I think your first idea

I think your first idea about writing council people is still the best one.

If a few of us write letters and post them on Hallwatch where they can be copied, it's easy to genrate a lot of letters.

I've always gottens replies to letters I've sent from Hallwatch about casino sites, so someone is reading this mail and dealing with it on some level.

Letters would be work as

Letters would be work as well but you have to realize that you are dealing with a company and employees who dont respect your and the citys property. If you write a letter and they address the company about it it will always come down to them saying "prove it" . I say cover yourself and video it.

And send a copy to TV news too.

yeah. i see what you're

yeah. i see what you're saying simmer!

I have photographs, i'm supposed to gather up everything I have to give to a councilman.

The funny thing is, there is definitely some political connection between the owners and phila city govt. They even somehow convinced someone to use city vehicles to level a lot they bought last winter.

So when I'm emailing and calling councilpeople, I keep wondering "are YOU part of their insider group?"

simmer's picture

photographs are good and its

photographs are good and its all part of the big picture but the problem is again with pictures is they will say "prove it" Video is the way to go. Just stay up one morning and tape it. Call all the media outlets and tell them what you have. They will come out of the woodwork for it. But before you call them. Call the company and tell them and the councilman. But Im telling you if they do damage to something that is insured and you have it on video and tell that to the insurance company, the insurance company will come after them hard.

Meanwhile, send a fax

Meanwhile, send a fax letter--it's easy and doesn't hurt. There's now one to copy on Hallwatch.
