Adaire School Teachers

Magooch's picture

I attended Adaire in the 1960s and was wondering if anybody remembers any of the fine teachers from that era, and if they know if any of them continued to teach there beyond the 60's. In particular the gym teacher Mr. Levin or the kindergarten teacher Mrs. DiNote.

Mr. V, Mrs. Kosinski & Mrs Voorhees are all still there. All 4 of my children are now in High School and had the teachers i mentioned. These teachers plus others is what makes Adaire a great school.

When I lived in F'town,

When I lived in F'town, Adaire was referred to as Adaire-Chandler. I guess there was another school named Chandler or something. Can anybody remember what that was all about? I was just a kid when we left and have some vague memories of Adaire.

Some of the teachers I remember were Weber, Steward, Worthington, Hammond, Hammett,
Brandt, Feller, Kraft, DiNote.

I also remember having lots of fun in the schoolyard during recess.

Chandler School was on

Chandler School was on Montgomery Avenue. After it closed it became apartments. When Chandler closed many of the children enrolled in Adaire; thus for a period of time some neighborhood people (especially those who went to Chandler) referred to it as Adaire Chandler.

I had Miss Di Note for kindergarten teacher in 1967. Mrs. Smolko for 2nd grade. (Adair). Mrs. Smolko accused me of stealing when it was another kid. Kindergartners had their own little fenced off recess area. Piano lessons with Mr. Crowley over on Palmer St. just up from St. Mary's Park. St. Laurentius for 3rd grade on.

Probably Miss Juliana, My brother had her for 4th in 1980,

I went to Chandler from k-3
I had Mrs. Rice I think for K
Mrs.Brown for 1st and 2nd.. (she is still at Adaire now)
Mrs Phylaw for 3rd

Mr V for gym
Then at Adaire

I had Miss Robinson who got married Mid-Year and was then Mrs. Voorhees
Mrs. Mccloud for 5th grade
Dr. Thomas for 6th,

Then on to Penn Treaty

Adaire/Chandler were sister schools and shared some of the same teachers, like Mr V at gym// Chandler closed when I was in 2nd grade, I think most of the riverside kids went to Chandler, it was closed for low enrollment. Most of the classed were combined.
George Chandler has a bust outside the first pres. church on Girard Ave.
