Adaire Issues

it's that time of year again...

Does anyone know if there is any truth to the rumor that Adaire is going to be cutting it's art classes?

If so, we have to do something about that.

My children attend Adaire. I don't think the art teacher is coming back. I do know there are alot of changes going on over there. Mr. McGrogan and the staff are in now. The number there is (215) 291-4712.

thats a bummer about art

thats a bummer about art being taken away. what other courses of action could be taken? if i did not have art growing up i do not want to think of how i would be different today.

does anyone know the name of the principal over there? i was hoping we could propose a mural arts program over there - but the program requires buy-in from the school / art teacher and several classes need to be dedicated to the program.

His name is Mr. Mc Grogan the number is (215) 291-4712, but the community liason is Ms. Devlin, the same number. She may be able to help you more.

ok, so I haven't called yet.

ok, so I haven't called yet. I sort of wanted to see if I could find out if this is really true before I call.

I understand that the art teacher is leaving, but not replacing him is ridiculous. It's bad enough Adaire has no music program and no playground, now they'll have no art classes? That's completely unacceptable.

Per a conversation with my daughter. The art teacher from the past years is sick. She said no one ever said if he was being replaced or if the art program was being shelved. I hope not, my children (even though they are 8th graders) love there art class.

Oh. I hope you're

Oh. I hope you're right!

and I hope the art teacher gets well soon.

If we can get confirmation that they're definitely NOT shelving art classes, maybe we can start trying to convince them to include music in their curriculum, like some other schools in the area have.

They have music lesson there @ adaire. My oldest daughter (who is now is high school) has taken violin lessons there for the past 4 years, they have drums and maybe some wind instruments.

How sad. I just spoke with the secretary at Adaire and asked if the school was having art classes this year. She said no, they don't have an art teacher. So Adaire won't be having art classes due to not having an art teacher, very sad.

My children have been at Adaire since kindegarten (1997) they have never had music class.

From my conversation with the school, no they are not trying to get a teacher. My children said he was diagnosed with cancer last year. So i am thinking they are holding his position, i don't know. i am looking into it.

Fair warning... I'm VERY out of the loop on this.
However, I remember the principal sharing at a meeting a year or two ago that Adaire's funding was being cut and that they would likely need to decrease their teaching staff by a few. I'm not sure what the current situation is, but I'm afraid that if I were the principal, as much as I'd hate to, I'd see this as an opportunity to do it via attrition and the loss of a non-core class. (That's NOT to say I don't support art in school!)

GuessWho's picture

i would agree w/ dan's

i would agree w/ dan's assessment (though i have NO proof); the art curriculum has been cut at most schools.
please bring your kids out to the fishtown diaries project kick-off tonight @ the library (5-8 PM); it's free!!

Thanks NHB!!! yeah, please

Thanks NHB!!! yeah, please let us know if you hear anything else!

Dan, I understand where they're coming from if that's what is going on. If that IS the case, it raises another question... why is a school district that is in utter dispair and shambles having it's funding CUT?

GuessWho's picture

it was a statewide

it was a statewide cut...actually, art funding has been cut across the board nationally. search this site for an online petition to fight the cuts...

In this specific case, it wasn't that the district was having its funding cut, but that Adaire was - due to declining enrollment. (Once again, this was 1-2 years ago. I don't know the current situation.)

Dan is right about Adaire losing funds. They have lost quite a few things over the years.

OK. Anyone know how to get a copy of the coming school year's proposed budget for Adaire? I feel like making a big deal about this.

If they are just holding his position, there is no reason to cut the program. That is what substitutes are for.

hello everyone..my name is tina and im the new home and school president at adaire(this is going to be my first year) ive been trying to meet with the principal for a while now since this is all new to me and im not really sure what im responsible for. anyway...when i do meet with him, and im expecting to sometime this week, i will be sure to bring this up. i havent heard anything about the art classes being cancelled but if it is true im surely going to find out what i can do to keep art in adaire. and i think music classes are a great idea. i cant see how the budget can be cut since i was told there is a big increase in students coming in from catholic schools. as soon as i know something i will post it.

All the while Paul vallas just saw his slary increase $25,000.00 per year to a meager $275,000.00, (Is that right), and extra incentive bonuses as well!

I am curious what folks think about that.
Personally, I think he is worth all that and more...
although I do understand some of the criticisms people have of him.
