handy man or plumber to put in laundry hookup

lilly's picture

Well, I'm in the process of buying a home in Fishtown and am new to the neighborhood. I already know that my first project as a home owner will be installing a laundry hookup on the second floor. It is right next to the bathroom so plumbing is not far. I think I'm going to opt for an electric dryer so I don't have to run gas lines up to the second floor. So I was just wondering if anybody has already completed a simliar project and if so about how much it would cost? As well as if anybody could recommend a handyman, plumber or electrican for the job.

Thanks,
Lisa

You probably know this, but you'll need a 220V circuit for the dryer as well as a 110 for the washer...and depending on the age of the house, that might prompt an upgrade main power box in the house.

Good Luck,
Joe

Lilly I don't know anyone that can help you. The one thing i will say is stick with your plan. I installed my Washer and dryer in my basement and i hate it. Second floor Laundrey rules.

i love my guy. he's an electrician by trade but does great plumbing & misc. handywork. he upgraded all the electric in my house (old knob & tube), installed additional outlets (included 220 lines), ran direct lines to the 3rd floor, etc etc etc.; he fixed my leaking faucet after 2 other shmucks were unable, built my closet, did misc. carpentry, etc etc etc.
i use him for everything after being severely traumatized by incompetent, unprofessional, irresponsible "contractors".
he does all the work on my friend's landlord's properties (10+ properties) & she's been using him for years...that's the best ref a contractor can get:

ps: i'll give you the same warning i give others: don't be shocked when he shows up @ your door...he's built like a linebacker & needs to duck under & sometimes turn sideways to fit in doorways in my home.

Yes.
Michael Thomas didn't finish the work he did for me after I paid him, didn't return calls and didn't return my house key either.

(You see, Brooke, it's sometimes worth while posting at least names, so other people can chime in with different perspectives on contractors...)

since he can't join us today to defend himself, i'm going to speak on his behalf & share his side to the story. mike says that he said he'd take a look at moving the radiator (which i don't think was part of the orig. agreement) but when he saw that all radiators would need to be bled, etc., he wasn't going to move it for nothing.

Then he should not have promised to do it in the first place.

When I gave him the money he said he would come in in a few days to deal with the radiator.
After the time passed without him showing, and many unanswered messages I left on his cell, I finally got hold of him at his home number. He said he had been very busy, but will make time to come over and deal with it.

So basically he told me 3 (three) times that he would do this job: once when I hired him, once when the bathroom was finished, and once when I called him.

Now I understand he never really intended to do it, but just lied to me about it.

Conclusion: he was dishonest and I was a fool to pay him before finishing the job. And he didn't even have the decency to drop off the house key I had entrusted him with.

The man's thermostat is set at 60 (or 62). All showers are cold at that temperature. :icon_cool

Thanks for the recommendations. Second floor laundry does rock! I hate basements and since it is only a 3/4 basement and I have to hunch around down there to even walk....I was forced to look else where in my house.

brooke's picture

Yeah, I have a first floor laundry and even though it wasn't on my list of things I wanted, now that I have one it would be very hard to go back to the basement!
