Highly Recommended Mechanic / Garage

I use, and highly recommend, Garrison's Garage at 2335 East Gordon Street (just off of Memphis Street), almost right behind Third Federal. I started using them a little under three years ago when I first moved here. In over 20 years of being a licensed driver, I've never had a garage I was happier to work with. I know people who moved out of the neighborhood over a decade ago, but still bring their cars back to Garrison's.

Why?

#1) They're honest.
#2) They do good work.
#3) Their prices are reasonable.

The only negative I can say is that they don't have some of the fancier computer equipment that some of the really big shops have. However, they'll be honest about what they can and can't do. Highly recommended.

Thats useful info for me.
My car was stolen, but I got it back,
It i just that now I have an oil leak, I think they ran over something really big!
I did all the major stuff, but need a tune up and when Igiot teh wheel aligned at Just Tires, they said it looks like my Front axel is bent.

And I need a new catalytic converter, (Spelling??)
So maybe I'll check there!
Thanks

Also, Cement Work, I don;t think you can go wrong with VOGT, They are in the Star!

I've been going to the same mechanic in Port Richmond (where I grew up) since I started driving ...I still went there even after I moved to Fishtown 10 years ago. About 5 years ago, Mike, one of the better mechanics there left to work at a luxury car dealer (Lexus?). I just found out he's moved on again and opened up his own garage at Belgrade and Dauphin sts in Fishtown. It's called B&D Auto. Mike is a great mechanic (experinenced, reliable and honest) and an old port richmond friend.

I used him to get my car inspected last week and will continue to patronize as long as he's in business in Fishtown. He said business was sort of slow but he kind of expected it in the beginning being new to the area and all.

...wish I'd known about Garrisons after I moved to Fishtown. It was nice to have a reliable mechanic in port richmond but sometimes taking the car there was a bit of a hassle.

larry, thanks for the heads up about mike at B&D. i took my car to him today and i was really impressed. he explained everything in great detail up front, seemed very knowledgeable and honest, and appears to do very good work. he was also pleasant to do business with. i will definitely patronize his business again, although i hope i don't have to very often. thanks again.

I took my car to "Jakes" at Castor and Ricmond sts. for a tune up and oil change. I was surprised with the service and reliability of the owner Bill Staab and his mechanics. Full engine service, transmission service, and body work too. I was very impressed and satisfied. I recomend them highly. There number is 215-535-8042. :)

dan, Larry99,

these 2 garages you recommend (Garrison's and B&D), do you need to make appoinments?
Do you have their phone numbers?

I need some brake work and some other stuff and I'm kinda getting tired of taking it all the way to my usual mechanic in Olney.

Thanks.

B&D phone is 215-426-6110.

You could probably just show up in the morning. I think he opens around 8:30 - 9:00. Depending on how busy he is and what exactly you need done, you might have to leave it for a few hours. ...and tell Mike that Larry sent'cha.

You definitely want to call Garrison's to make an appt.
They are usually very busy.

If I get my royal butt there sometime...Yeah, I haven't taken my car there yet.

Going to try to get there for an inspection/emissions test within this week. I'll give the royal approval, I'm sure.

Larry, thanks for the recommendation. Just took my car there for an emissions inspection and to fix a "check engine soon" light. He explained everything very well, took a lot of time with me and was really very honest...even before I dropped your name, Larry! :) Turns out I had some sensor out and he worked to get me the best price for the part--even was going to let me have it shipping from the dealership where my mom works so I'd get the discount.

Anyway, I'm totally pleased and would recommend Mike to anyone. His prices, services and skills are excellent! And this is quite something to really make me happy because I swear I'm the worst customer ever. (My own mother swears she'll never sell me a car again...and that I'm the type of customer she complains about all the time...)

Thanks again Larry. B&D Auto is my new mechanic! (Hopefully I won't need to see him often though--knock on wood!)

Whew! ...I was a little nervous about you going and even considered giving Mike a heads up call so he wouldn't inadvertently piss you off

Seriously tho, I'm glad you had a good experience with him.

snailgem's picture

Highly Recommended Mechanic / Garage

Well, let me pipe in here with my experience at B&D couple months ago.
I took the car in for brake service and an oil change
To make a long story short, this took 2 days: the first day his supplier sent him the wrong parts. Since I needed my car at 4, I had him put it back together and brought it back next day, when the job was finally done.
Mike was correct and apologetic about the delay. The only thing I found annoying is that he never once called me to update me about the status of the job.

brooke's picture

Keep in mind he's only one person though. To get a mechanic that is honest, won't try and sell you stuff you don't need or sabotage your car and actually know what they're doing is really difficult.

In my typical annoying customer way, I kept calling him so he didn't have a chance not to call me!

This is why I'm much more productive outside office hours....no stopping to answer the phone every 10 minutes. 8)

Glad you found someone you like to fix your car though. Might need to have him check the ball joints on my Dakota next week.

I also find that annoying when they say they will call and don't.
My new tactic is to ask them when they ecspect to know, I then tell them if I don't hear by then I will call. I then call. Let's face it your mechanic is just not that into you.

Lol. Great Sex and the City reference. That's a good tactic...I tend to do the same thing.

What can I say?
If I drop off my car at 8:30 and say I need it back at 4 and by 2PM the mechanic doesn't call and when I call he says he got sent the wrong parts and is expecting new ones any moment, and I ask him to keep me updated because I really need the car at 4 and at 3:30 he hasn't called and I call and the parts are still not there and I know I'm the only job in the shop at the time - yes, this tends to annoy me.

Larry99's picture

Snail, sorry you didn't have such a great experience w/Mike. I'm not sure exactly what you were having done but my only thoughts would be that it doesn't really take a long time to put on new brake pads if thats all it was, so I'm sure once he got the parts it would have taken him all of about 15 mins to do the job. ...esp if your car was already on the lift, with the wheels off, etc. It would probably have been more work to put your car back together and take it off the lift. ...I realize that's not your problem and he could've called you with an update but I guess shit happens, as they say.

snailgem's picture

larry, it was just brake service + oil change (tho he had to replace the rotor on one of them).
Again, I think he did a good job, and was straightforward with me and I give him a good grade for the actual work (the delay in parts was not his fault).
I'm giving him a poor grade for communication tho: I don't expect a mechanic alwyas to call me, but when something is wrong and I might not get the car back the same day, yeah, I do expect a call.

My Favorite Garage is Smittys its on the bend of Aramingo that turns into Girard. Not only is he reasonable, he will get a part from the junkyard, he works late at night, also Saturdays, I drop my car off and if needed he gives me a ride to work, Tommy owns the shop and I love that no matter where my hunk of junk breaks down I can always call Smitty's and they will come get me and take me where I need to go

Isn't that just one of the human needs...knowing that if something goes wrong, someone will be there to fix it, make it better and see you're on your way? Heck, it's one of the underlying reasons we have religion and why we say 'Hi Mom' to the TV cameras.

Fortunately, for some reason, my ball joints don't need fixing or Chrysler hasn't gotten around to me yet in their recall, but maybe I'll try one of these folks for my oil change. Too cold to lie on the ground and do it myself.

-Joe, whose ball joints are fully functional.

I don't take my car to a mechanic for an oil Change, I go to jiffy Lube on Aramingo, $29 bucks, gets me an oil change, top off on all my other fluids, vacuum and a car wash =) all in 15 minutes ...........

I stopped going to Jiffy Lube when they put the wrong fluid in my differential. Once they forgot to screw the oil plug back in all the way on my brothers car. All the oil ended up leaking out by the time he got home. ...mmmm, wonder why the engine is smoking like that?

I won't go to a Jiffy Lube for that reason--too many horror stories I've heard from family members. I have the luxury of having parents who work at car dealerships and get service when I'm home in upstate NY for dealer cost of parts--I usually don't pay anything there for oil changes at all...but I did take my car to Pep Boys and was pleased but now I plan on going to Mike at B&D Auto.

thanks for the tip to try out Mike at B&D. Will definitely try them. Have been happy with Garrison's but they are so busy that sometimes it's hard to get in there (although I'm always happy with their service). They are very honest. If you don't need something for the repair, they are upfront about it and don't try to hoodwink you.

Took my car in to Garrison's a couple weeks ago and was impressed with the service on all levels: they listened to the problem and told me what they thought was wrong; then they called me to tell me it wasn't what they thought (happily, since it would have been very expensive); they found another problem and called to ask if I wanted it fixed. When I picked up the car I got a printout with a detailed explanation of everything. Everyone from mechanic to the owner to the clerk were friendly and helpful.

Jakes

Sadly, Bill Staab sold the ground where Jake's was and it has already been bulldozed...

I used to goto Billy mostly because he was an old neighbor and my son and his son were best friends. He was good, and reasonable, and will be missed.

Billy and his wife keep talking about moving full time to West Virginia..
