Sketches of Fishtown

Jeffro's picture

Sean Gallagher and I are heading up an art project called "Sketches of Fishtown". The project will consist of a series of pieces that depict Fishtown landmarks, neighbors, events and memories. The purpose of this art project is to save and document our memories. The pieces will be distributed in the neighborhood for free and hopefully collected in bookform somewhere down the line. These "sketches" will vary in style and content from as long back as we can remember right up until today. If you would like to participate in the project, you can email photos and anecdotes to sketchesoffishtown@gmail.com

Please make sure to include your name, mailing address and other contact information. If we do reference your words or photos, you will be given full credit.

Only in the jumbled album of my mind...and since I have an etch-a-sketch memory and not a photographic one, well, you get the idea. But just reading the store name took me back to standing in line for lunchmeat on Sunday for the following week's lunches and lugging home the sunday Inquirer.

hahaha...you posted Hommo

hahaha...you posted Hommo perfectly it made me think of nailing my cousin Mikey in the back , ahh the good old days before he had crazy dreadlocks. thanks for the flashbacks Jeffro! The fields were always a good time too, a little scary getting under there when you were little, but I guess those frogger skills came in handy afterall.

I still have a blue plastic

I still have a blue plastic unicorn in a standing up pose from the Five & Ten. I remember how excited I was when I saw those unicorns.....Me, my Mom, and my Nan would walk up and down Girard Ave. every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon, weather permitting (Saturdays were the Gallery and Sundays were church and dinner at Nan's). We would eat lunch at Tommy's. I miss Mary serving me the best chicken noodle soup in the world.

I have no pictures of Farmer's Choice but I still remember exactly what it smelled like.

Remember when Thriftway was on Girard Ave??? And the fire!!!!!!

You brought back many memories with this post..... *sigh*

Yes, the back left hand

Yes, the back left hand corner of the store was the "toy dept".
It was were the cut-out books, and the colorforms were kept.

I mostly remember the popcorn machine by the front door.

The deli there was gosh awful slow, but the toys were all in the back left corner (hmm) above the dairy case. I remember sour creme being sold there in glass containers which became glasses when the sour creme was gone (They even had one of them penn maid glasses on the table in the Sixth Sense which made me think the prop master got that right! ), and I remember the daily news/bulletin/Inquirer's displayed there making a big deal about this guy elvis dying.

Figured since our last issue focused on high tech Pastor Dan, the old tymie Reverend Woolston would be a good followup:
