Sketches of Fishtown

Jeffro's picture

Sean Gallagher and I are heading up an art project called "Sketches of Fishtown". The project will consist of a series of pieces that depict Fishtown landmarks, neighbors, events and memories. The purpose of this art project is to save and document our memories. The pieces will be distributed in the neighborhood for free and hopefully collected in bookform somewhere down the line. These "sketches" will vary in style and content from as long back as we can remember right up until today. If you would like to participate in the project, you can email photos and anecdotes to sketchesoffishtown@gmail.com

Please make sure to include your name, mailing address and other contact information. If we do reference your words or photos, you will be given full credit.

What's really scary is this already sounds better than about 85% of children's television out there right now.

i always imagined him being famous and dodging papparazzi honestly in my animated dreams

when kristin and i take him for walks and people CONSTANTLY stop him on the street i think to myself how if he could speak...he'd say something like "now i know what brad pitt feels like" in that off the wall tone of voice the animal/appliances in the flintstones always said "eh...it's a living"

It's been a while. I know these have seen print, but I forgot to post them here:

Also, here is a sneak peek at this week's. Hooker Lynch was definitely the most requested person to draw for this project. It was just really difficult finding a good smiling photo of him over the past four years. However, I found one while looking through some photos at Moe's Tavern, so I borrowed it to draw. I was re-energized with the project again. Hook got me started collecting comics. This guy meant a lot to me and a lot of other Fishtowners:

Jeffro, looking at Hooker and the house by the " Canno " brought back a rush of memories. Thanks for sharing once again. Patti Meyer

You're welcome, Patti. The Hooker sketch got a nice response from all the guys I went to grade school and high school with. I sure do miss that guy.

Well, here's the next one. I dunno how many people remember, but originally, these were supposed to be done once a week for a straight year (totaling 52 comics in the entire project). This week's was supposed to be last.

However, I didn't get it done in a year. Plenty of unpredictable setbacks and sidetracks. So here I am - three years later. So much has changed in the neighborhood even since the project started. I've decided to just keep the project going at this point until I run out of ideas and feedback. I love this neighborhood. Thanks to everybody for your help.

This one's important to me

This one's important to me because my dad wrote the words. Stan was a great guy...

Also, on January 31, 2009, I will be having a big book release party at Holy Name Church Hall for Sketches of Fishtown, Volume 1. The book will collect Issues 1 - 52. More info on that later. Here is the cover:

Jeffro, I have to say thank you for giving me a visual tour of my lifetime.

I decided to go through and look at all the pages in this thread; it was an awesome trip.

Oh, and thanks for the sketch of Debbie. You are so right she was a hero. It's nice to be reminded of your friends who are gone but never forgotten.

Been friends with Kevin for too many years. His shop was the McCloskey's playroom when we were kids (and it still had the old-tymie barber chairs). My Mom had her surprise 40th birthday party in that shop. Well, here's this week's:

I kinda screwed up on this

I kinda screwed up on this in that the direction of the bricks are not parallel to the bracing of the sign. But the picture I had for reference was taken with a disposable camera with no flash, so it was hard to make out the background. I took the photo in high school.
