Sketches of Fishtown

Jeffro's picture

Sean Gallagher and I are heading up an art project called "Sketches of Fishtown". The project will consist of a series of pieces that depict Fishtown landmarks, neighbors, events and memories. The purpose of this art project is to save and document our memories. The pieces will be distributed in the neighborhood for free and hopefully collected in bookform somewhere down the line. These "sketches" will vary in style and content from as long back as we can remember right up until today. If you would like to participate in the project, you can email photos and anecdotes to sketchesoffishtown@gmail.com

Please make sure to include your name, mailing address and other contact information. If we do reference your words or photos, you will be given full credit.

Jeff
Your sketch of Danny Shissler was awesome ! Your works truly capture the heart , soul and spirit of the subjects.

That's very nice of you to say. Thanx. Dan's son, Danny is engaged to my sister. I never knew his Dad, but he's a good dude. So I'm sure he comes from good people.

As a kid I lived with my grandmother in the 2nd floor front apartment of Dan's Meat market ( no relation ) , the Shissler's lived in the rear. Danny Sr.'s father was my mother's cousin, so I had the pleasure of knowing him.Although I don't know his children I am sure they felt the same about your sketch. And now that his son will be a memeber of your family I am sure you will see why Newt's was renamed Shissler's Rec. Dan was truly a person who cared about Fishtown and it's youth.
Thanks once again and I look forward to your work.

What a beautiful tribute. I have to say it's the first "Sketch" to bring tears to my eyes. Thanks for the links.

Thanx, Meyer. It's me who's lucky. Hey, by the way, do you know Bobby? He's the king!

I didn't actually draw the following strip from scratch. I just inked over the old reference photo that Barbie Small provided. I couldn't make out enough of the detail to recreate the picture entirely. Also, I'm crazy swamped lately, and this issue needed to be finished really quickly. Given the immediacy of the topic, I didn't have the liberty to take my time and pick away at it like usual. So I whipped out the Winsor Newton and used it as an inking exercise...

Sorry it's been so long. Moving into a new house has proven to be a GIGANTIC undertaking.

The numbering on these two are actually off. This one is number 20:

My main man, Digs is number 21. When I print the book, I'll change that. Sorry:

Jeffro, thank you, my family will be touched.

I wasn't around in the time of Rosie, and my mom has since passed, so the story is actually my dad's, whose photo w/Rosie was taken either on the riverside of Seskie or Cedar & Dauphin. My mom's was taken around Sergeant & Cedar, and featured a different pony, so it seems there were either multiple gentlemen working in different sections, or multiple ponies.

Jeffro's picture

Sketches of Fishtown

Maybe both. When I was young, my cousin Bennie usedta work in the stables around here. He didn't take photos or anything, but he'd walk the horses around the streets a lot. Maybe that's where the ponies came from. Anyone know for sure?

Incidentally, sorry I haven't been circulating the printed Sketches of Fishtown fliers for the past couple months. An onslaught of life's little apocalypses has prevented me from having the time to do so. I hope to be out and about soon hitting up the telle poles and shops again.

I just wanted to give a heads up - next week, I will start releasing the "Sketches of Fishtown" pieces again. I have some students who'll be hanging 'em up around the neighborhood (they get community service credit hours for North Catholic). I would love to hear some ideas for future issues. Please email me ideas, photos, etc:

I apologize for taking the year and change off. Truth is that things went terribly wrong in my life. Four months after buying my first house with my gal of 7 years, I caught the young lady cheating on me. Aside from losing the gal I thought I was gonna marry, I was also without a permanent place to stay. Sleeping on my old man's couch, no drawing studio, etc. In April I finally got an apartment, but getting my name off that house was a grueling experience. I know that's a big wad of very personal information. But I wanted to let you know I just wouldn't drop a project like this without a good reason.

So basically, it was all I could do to get up out of bed every day, much less organize my thoughts for this project. So I concentrated on more immediate art projects. But I love doing these. I love the interaction with my neighbors. I feel I have a responsibility to finish at least 52 of these as I originally intended. So please take a look here next week or read it in the Spirit.

Thanks. Jeffro

PS - You can also post ideas for Sketches f Fishtown on this thread. I'll check it regularly.

Safe to say a lot of us have been there, Jeff. I know I have.

Hate to see bad things happen to a good guy like you, but glad you're coming out from that dark cloud. You'll be stronger for it.

Looking forward to seeing a lot more of your amazing work (such as the print of the kid in a Fishtown A.C. shirt that now hangs proudly on my wall)
