Sketches of Fishtown

Jeffro's picture

Sean Gallagher and I are heading up an art project called "Sketches of Fishtown". The project will consist of a series of pieces that depict Fishtown landmarks, neighbors, events and memories. The purpose of this art project is to save and document our memories. The pieces will be distributed in the neighborhood for free and hopefully collected in bookform somewhere down the line. These "sketches" will vary in style and content from as long back as we can remember right up until today. If you would like to participate in the project, you can email photos and anecdotes to sketchesoffishtown@gmail.com

Please make sure to include your name, mailing address and other contact information. If we do reference your words or photos, you will be given full credit.

Jeffro (& Co.),
These are awesome. I've been either biking or hibernating so I haven't been on the sidewalks enough lately to see them on the telly poles, but I enjoy them online or in the paper/s.

Also I got my cards today from CCTC, so thanks for posting that too.

Thank you. We're late hanging this one up. I'm actually getting ready to go out and hang them now (on Christmas Eve). Sorry so late. Merry Christmas.

By the way, folks are more than welcome to submit ideas for this project here. This thread isn't just for us to showcase the work. You can post ideas here or reference photos. Or just email us at: sketchesoffishtown@gmail.com. I dunno if you remember from the articles, but this project is for everyone in Fishtown. The whole purpose is for neighborhood unity. I know that alot of it so far has focused on history, but we welcome any input from any Fishtowner. The project is kind of organic in that way.

The only thing is that we wanna focus more on the positive things about the neighborhood, to give people a sense of pride. Not to say we can't highlight the strange and unusual ([i:b2e649139d]like the Pizza Truck[/i:b2e649139d]). Just so long as it's done in the form of good-natured ribbing.

Anyways, thanx.

Hey Jeffro,

Loved one of the latest Sketches of Fishtown (Fresh Pretzels), but doesn't it go more like this? [i:cf9c0e5f9f]"freeehhhsh preeeeht-ZEHLS awwreeehdy, freeehsh..."[/i:cf9c0e5f9f]

A true summer-in-the-city memory.

Hey...Jeff's an artist, not a linguist. Though to be fair, your phonetic spelling is how I read it. :D

I guess that is one variation of the song. I forgot where to put the accents.

Anyone remember the last Pretzel Boy, the one that hung on to the tradition til the end? All the young kids stopped selling them. This guy was in his twenties and rode around on his bike. He sang the song wrong. All you'd hear flying down your block in the morning is "[b:de930777d2][i:de930777d2]Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssshhhh! Freeeeeeeeesssssssssssshhhhhhh![/i:de930777d2][/b:de930777d2]"

Jeffro -

Your sketches are amazing. Maybe you already answered this, but have you thought of putting a book together? I would buy it, that's for certain. And I am going to keep asking you to start selling your stuff. I need pictures for my walls...!

Thanx, Kat. Yes, we do plan on putting these together in book form after #52 (one year's worth). We're still looking at funding sources though. Perhaps a way for the printing to be sponsored by a local nonprofit organization, then have the money from sales go to charity or something. Only because we don't want to take any money for ourselves from book sales because we're using alot of ideas and words of Fishtown neighbors. So taking money would make things a little sticky. But I'm sure we'll figure it out. We've already been approached by a few people who could spot the funds, then after we pay them back from sales, the rest can go to a local charity or something. We'll see what happens.

As far as my art goes, I show and sell a few times a year at a gallery in Olde City. Unless you meant commissions, which I do take every now and again if I get a break from freelance and charity work. It all depends. It's rare that I have the time, but I make exceptions. "PM" me and tell me what you have in mind.

Thanx again for being so nice. Lemme know if you have any suggestions for the "Sketches" project.

Can you give us an idea what kind of money it takes to publish a book like this?

Jeffro's picture

Sketches of Fishtown

It all depends on the kind of paper and coverstock. Also, it depends on the binding. I'm gonna ask a bunch of printers from Fishtown to Canada for different quotes like I usually do when printing up a book. Then see who can get me the best quality product for the least money.

When I first printed my own comics, I used 70lb paper with a matte-coated cover stock. That was kinda high end for something independently produced, but the grays and the details come out nicer, so it was worth it. I printed 2,000 copies and with shipping the price came to just about $1,800 bux. The went back for another 1,500 copies about a year later because we sold out the first printing. But that was 2 years ago, and I had the book printed in Canada. Another bonus was no tax (no tax to anything printed in Canada and shipped to the U.S. - it's the law). So that was cool.

Now that book was only 32 pages. This book will have a bunch more pages, so I'm not sure if we'll be able to get the cheaper binding (saddle stitched). And I'll probably only get the minimum quantity (1,000 copies) since the book isn't going to be distributed nationally or internationally. There's not a really wide market for something like this.

Anyways, I can't get a quote til we're ready to go to print. So without any research whatsoever, I'm thinking about $3,000 bux. Give or take a few hundred. Like I said, we'll have no problem raising the dough. It's a matter of us handling money that other people's ideas contributed to. We pledged in the beginning that we would not profit from this and we meant it. It's a labor of love. And sadly sometimes, when you involve money in a community project (kids sports clubs, charity stuff, etc.), people start to gossip about where the money is going. It can get hairy in a small community. I don't wanna fall into all that. But I'm sure we'll figure it out by year's end.

Anyways, Snail. I know that was WAY more info than you asked for. Sorry about that. It's the Pepsi I had for lunch.

thanks jeffro, always good to know all this stuff.
now, about that first book, are there copies left?

Jeffro's picture

Sketches of Fishtown

Yeah. I still have a few hundred copies that I take to comics shows and cartoon art festivals and stuff. I believe they have some at the Rocket Cat. I donated some copes so the money can go to the Positive Space group.

Sketches of Fishtown will be taking a break this week. However, we'd like to put a call out. We're looking for some very specific reference material. Specifically pictures of:

Women stitching baseballs on their stoops
Maurice
Thomas "Hooker" Lynch
Old Penn Treaty Park (when they had a pavillion and boats would park at the pier)
Soupy Island
Anything else people wanna contribute.

Thanx in advance.

You forgot the 'Four Poun's fer a Dollah'.

:-)

Oh, wait, i see them in there...hidden behind the truck.

Do you remember the trucks that had small carnival rides that came around?
-Joe

I do remember that. Mike McCloskey also submitted that as an entry..."The Whip" was the one I remember.

jmminarik's picture

I remember the whip...but I believe there was also a small ferris wheel. 4 'cars' if I recall correctly. Being a kid I only thought of the fun, but that must have been a tough life if that was the operaters' only income.

There was a little red Fire Truck that took kids for a ride around the block 2 or 3 times for a dime. And let's not forget John the Bleach man or the horseradish grinder who strolled the streets of Fishtown selling from a wooden cart.

And John the Pretzel man who we always found on the way home from school in my very early years. Unfortunately, that's all I know of him.

He was the guy with the Penny Pretzels, right? A bunch of people have been telling me about him.

Might be...I've dim recollections. The one thing I do know is I tried mustard for the first time on one of his pretzels and I didn't like it. I also threw the pretzel on the ground it tasted so foul. From that experience I learned that mustard tastes bad, and throwing food on the ground is bad. Ah, kindergarden.
