Sketches of Fishtown

Jeffro's picture

Sean Gallagher and I are heading up an art project called "Sketches of Fishtown". The project will consist of a series of pieces that depict Fishtown landmarks, neighbors, events and memories. The purpose of this art project is to save and document our memories. The pieces will be distributed in the neighborhood for free and hopefully collected in bookform somewhere down the line. These "sketches" will vary in style and content from as long back as we can remember right up until today. If you would like to participate in the project, you can email photos and anecdotes to sketchesoffishtown@gmail.com

Please make sure to include your name, mailing address and other contact information. If we do reference your words or photos, you will be given full credit.

Wouldn't it be great to compile what you are doing and work with the Philly Mural Arts people to create a much-needed mural at the Fishtown Rec Center (on 'Big-Bellies' bar wall that faces the playground)?

I guess that would be cool, but I'm not a Mural painter. Neither is Sean. I work small. And I'm trying not to get sidetracked, as I have been many times before. But we'll see how it goes after we get some stuff together. I know a few people with the Mural Arts. If things work out nicely, maybe I'll talk to them. Thanx for the input.

Sketches of Fishtown

We are looking to do a commemorative piece on Joseph Konrad for the "Sketches of Fishtown" project. Can anyone point me in the direction of a photo for reference? Even if I can find a place to get in touch with his family (that you can email me). I'm waiting to hear back from Local 22's PR Department. And I know the mural is up, but I feel strange referencing someone else's art for a drawing (although I will do some loose sketching at Konrad Square for this piece).

This is a really important one. My Dad fought at the fire that took Joe. Joe Konrad lost his life fighting to preserve the lives of the people of Fishtown. It means a great deal that we show our appreciation in this art project.

If anyone can help me out, I'd be super-grateful. Thanx in advance.

If you contact New Kensington CDC, they may be able to help you.

Paul Malvey, who is (was?) their open spaces director, has had a lot to do with the park and with the family.

Thanx, Dan. I was just ([i:05dab3bd5a]meaning just two minutes ago[/i:05dab3bd5a]) around leaning against your church doing a quick sketch of the mural. Just to get an idea of his face before I see some photos. Those little hockey playing kids (who, aside from their constant cussing) seemed to be pretty good kids. They speak very highly of you, saying you are "a good guy".

I know Paul. He was a friend of my folks for years and helps the Positive Space folks too. I'll ask him sometime soon. I shoulda thought about that since he spoke at the ceremony in June.

Thanx again. When finished, I'll give the original sketch to Mr. Konrad's family.

They only say that b/c my wife is so good to them.

Dan -

Paul Malvey isn't there anymore - it is an ugly, long story which makes me mad just to think about it. He and Linda were over at hour house a few weeks back. It's a big loss to the community. He is one heck of a guy and we need more people like him involved in Fishtown.

Sorry to hear that. I was wondering why he wasn't listed on the website.

Not to be a suck-up, but I think this goes beyond quality into the realm of really good.

I really like both Jeff's ability to work the minute details (as shown in the fishies) and to express a concept with a more minimalist approach (as shown in the sketch of Dickens). Of course, I am biased. I like art to accurately represent life in most cases, not be an impression of it.

Question...

Jeff,

May I have your permission to put your drawings on the front page after you've posted them in the forums?

Thanks.

Sure, Dan. Thanx. Also, thanx for alla the nice things you guys said. Remember if anyone has any ideas, please shoot them to Sean Gallagher or me at this email: sketchesoffishtown@gmail.com

This is a community-wide project, and alotta folks have contributed some great anecdotes, stories, people and photos. We're hoping to show some history, heritage, hopefully even bring some unity. I don't know exactly how it's all gonna turn out, but it's fun so far. We get to know people like Ken Milano, who's a goldmine of information.

Oh, by the way, does anyone have a photo of the old Anzon Christmas Star? Someone submitted a great statement about it, but it'd be much easier if we had a photo for reference.

Thanx again.

I appreciate it. I can't take alla the credit though. Had it not been for my cousin and partner on this project, Sean Gallagher, this fun project wouldn't be happening. We have been pooling ideas and working on them since mid summer. It's as much a family project, aimed at giving us a reason to work together, as it is anything else. Plus we both have a huge love for Fishtown.

Anyways, since Sean doesn't frequent the internet too often, on his behalf, I say thanx.

Don't have much to add except the fact that you are truly blessed. :D Amazing work. My husband is a life-long Fishtowner and is proud of where he is from - he has an antique map of Fishtown framed in our parlor. And like the rest, don't want to be a suck up, but I would seriously consider one of your pieces as a gift for my awesome husband for Christmas - you can PM me on the specifics..??

Thanks

Kat

Heh. I've been contemplating pm'ing Jeff about some commisioned work, but since I'm not the only one interested in a christmas gift, Jeff, do you guys do commissions?

And I was thinking of a church logo. What are your rates?

Jeffro's picture

Sadly, I'm gonna be kinda swamped through the holidays. I teach in the mornings, then work a dayjob. And my nights right now are pretty much booked with freelance and charity projects. So I won't be able to handle commissions. Sorry. I appreciate the offer though.

When I get some downtime (it usually comes sporadically), I'll drop you a PM and see if you still want something. I don't have like a blanket rate or anything. Mostly I just do a bunch of independant comics and art show stuff. The freelance work I do take from time to time is corporate illustration stuff that pays way too good to pass up (I'm embarrassed to admit that). Other than that, I just do a bunch of favors for people when I have time. Anyways, thanks again.

I'm sorry if that last post made me sound like a self-important j.o., by the way. I'm just caught in a really superbusy time.

I can't imagine any intelligent person would have read your post the way you're worried about, so stop worrying...I plan to live forever or die trying so I have time. And there's always next Christmas.

We'd like to put next week's out early before Thanxgiving. So I'm posting this one a little early:

Like I said, we're coming a little early this week, mostly due to the subject matter tying directly into the holiday. Hopefully, I'll see some of you folks there tomorrow. I won't embarrass myself by signing up to play, but I will be screaming from the sidelines.

Happy Thanksgiving, everybuddy!

Great work, as always.

So, what time does the Turkey Bowl start, should some interlopers want to stop by and catch some of the action?

I think it's 10 AM, Dan. If I am mistaken, I'll reply to this post later.

Sorry to say I missed the Turkey Bowl.
I've been sick and took advantage of the opportunity to sleep in.
I hope everybody had a great time, and a great Thanksgiving!

We're late with this one.

We're late with this one. Well, not really since there is no real deadline. But we usually try to get them out every weekend. It's just this dang rain. We're not getting a chance to hang them due to cruddy weather. Anyways, here's Sean's latest:
