i was just reading that the city is looking for donations for the St. Patrick's day parade i'm just guessing that every event from here on out will be taking up collections so german, irish, polish, hispanic,of course the mummers and god forbid what if we win the world series again please start now collecting for your just cause. and while we're at could we put a little aside to open a bigger prison with just one way in and no way out ?

Soon Nutter's gonna sell

Soon Nutter's gonna sell naming rights to the city like a stadium. We'll be the City of Philadelphia brought to you by Comcast.

I'm all for it to tell you

I'm all for it to tell you the truth. I know these events may boost a sense of civic pride, but I would rather my city's limited resources go to more fundamental things like schools, cops, fire, libraries, etc. Unlike the feds, our city can't just print cash or run deficits to keep us going.

If someone wants to have a parade great! Let them pony up the cash. Our city is broke right now.

The only real potential problem might be if companies give all their donation $$ to parades instead of things like food banks.

could you tell me what is

could you tell me what is wrong with the groups having the parades helping with the costs ? With the city in the money crunch that it is, doesn't it make sense to expect these groups to help pay ?

Nothing really. I think it's just a matter of getting used to this being the norm. We've been so used to having this stuff in the city. It looks like we're just going to have to realize that this is how it's going to be from now on.

BTW, I was not knocking Nutter at all. I think he was left with a gigantic mess from the previous joke of an administration. I believe in Nutter. I think he has great vision and can take this city to the next level. Unfortunately this budget crisis is going to hamper a lot of what he would like to do.

Unfortunately, for a lot of people, it doesn't seem to have much to do with anything anymore except getting sloshed. Not much emphasis on the Irish heritage aspect. It's still fun though IMO.

we should just have one big

we should just have one big get drunk parade. That could be a money saver if we combine it all ... y'know, wave all them flags and drink up.
Cool.

I do think we could raise some funds, however, by selling the naming rights of prisons. I like the idea of perhaps the Applebees detention center.

You ever go to the Applebee's on Aramingo? It IS a detention center.

I agree with you here. Nutter has been the best thing to come along in this city for a long time.

I think its great that

I think its great that people have come forward to sponsor the Saint Patrick's day parade; one of the oldest in the country.

The city isn't asking for the money, it is the group that organizes the parade. We'll probably see the same thing for the Polish parade. These groups have to pay thousands of dollars to the city for police, sanitation, etc. (even though the city gets revenue from the sales and hotel rooms).
