Why would this be a issue in these times ???

"A political battle is brewing over control of the radio airwaves as Democrats consider pushing for the revival of the Fairness Doctrine, an FCC policy that requires broadcast stations to provide opposing views on controversial issues of public importance."

I think the righties over at Fox are just trying to wip up the base. The right wing loves to feel persecuted. (See: war on Christmas)

A quick google News search brings up only right leaning web-sites.

they are in full-out attack/obstruct mode against the obama administration. anything that could be scandal-worthy (though it seems silly to think that you could attack somethign called the fairness doctrine) gets the full limbaugh-hannity-beck treatment.

But is there a critical mass of those on the left who would listen? Outside a few narrow topics like gun banning, the left isn't nearly as focused on their particular rants en masse.

I was thinking something similar. How many lefties really want to listen to a show whose sole focus is to bash the people who have opposing views? Sure, I listen to NPR, and I know that I get some left wing biased news that way, but biased news is different from screaming and yelling and personal attacks.

I always thought the

I always thought the fairness doctrine was a good idea when I was a kid. It made perfect sense that if a TV news station had an editorial, the other side should be able to present the opposing view. Likewise, giving one candidate or party airtime without giving it to the other seemed absurd.

However, that was in a day in which politics were kept out of "entertainment". I just don't know how you'd balance it out today.

It's a little easier to propose balancing out something like Rush Limbaugh or Charles Binder. But how do you balance Fox News or MSNBC? (which are mostly cable, but which have some broadcast outlets) What about NPR or even SNL?

Just pondering out loud...

I thought about this a lot during the recent presidential campaign.

I think left and right are just as guilty.
They do it in generationally different ways.

The Right uses with radio and television talk shows.
The Left uses YouTube videos and parody websites.

2 hrs every weeknight on MSNBC (Keith Olberman and Rachael Maddow) is pretty over the top left. I actually enjoy these shows but also like to balance them out with a little O'Rielly every now and then. It's great entertainment. As with everything, the reality lies somewhere in the middle.

Democrats in power don't

Democrats in power don't want anything to do with a fairness doctrine. Right now they have the loudest voice- controlling congress and the whitehouse. Why would they want to share?

And when I say "share" I don't just mean with Republicans. It would only be "fair" to let the Green party have their say. What about the Libertarian viewpoint? What about Al Quida's for that matter? There is never just 2 points of view.

The original post was all text and no links. Still, if the best you can do is Fox News, it's a non-story. Fox News regularly runs straight Republican talking points as news. So we know this is a GOP talking point, but I doubt that there's anything to it beyond that.

When roma258 responded, there wasn't a link to Fox.
