Television on the Radio

Let me just preface this comment by saying, I love music, of almost all types, and pride myself on trying to stay up to date with what's relevant these days...with that being said, what is the deal with TVOTR?
I saw them on SNL this weekend, (yes, shutup, I still watch it faithfully, as if John Belushi is gonna make a guest appearance someday!)...while they were obviously good musicians, I just couldn't get with it..and that rarely happens to me, yet I seen a ton of positive press about them.
Should I give them a second try, or are they just overated?

typical hipster music. maybe

typical hipster music. maybe I just don't get it. maybe I'm just too old to get it. or maybe I just don't listen to bad music just so that I can be cool.

I didn't particularly like

I didn't particularly like their SNL performance, but I have to say that their sound is pretty creative, compared to alot of the mainstream schlock that's out there. Not my fave band in the world, but not awful.

I never heard of them until

I never heard of them until the complaining about them on here. (It has happened a few times.)

While I wouldn't put them in my "all time best" list, I certainly enjoy listening to their stuff.

They're one of my favorite

They're one of my favorite bands, quite possibly the favorite. Though I missed their SNL performance, I can see why some people might be put off. Their music usually requires a few listens before sinking in and a few of their tracks are just not very accessible. I highly recommend giving TVOTR a chance, some of their stuff is just incredibly uplifting and beautiful (some is quite dark too).

Couple tracks to download:
Dreams
Crying
Love Dog
Lover's Day

i didn't see the performance

i didn't see the performance and i'm not really familiar with TVOTR, but SNL always has the worst audio mix for bands. the vocals and drums are always too high compared to the rest of the instruments which can make a great band sound terrible. i've seen plenty of bands that i like play on SNL and thought they sounded awful, so i wouldn't be surprised if this at least played a minor part.

I saw them several years ago

I saw them several years ago in some warehouse in Balto. I thought they were just horrible. I still think so. I don't get the hype in anyway nor do I understand how this music even qualifies as hipster or "indie". I must be old. Gone are the days when I knew every band on Merge records and spent hours and $ in record stores (OH Stinkweeds of Tempe, Az I do miss you) but geez- even then I wouldn't have liked this band!

Did you mention Merge records?

You know that obliges me to say that I went to high school with Jon Wurster.

Nice- that totally trumps my "dated the guitarist from Aquanaut Drinks Coffee and sometimes lived in the house that Jimmy Eat World had band practice at" card.

I will always be a Superchunk girl. Always.

Okay, different strokes: I

Okay, different strokes: I like them and saw them at the Troc and they were really good. BUT it's not Television on the Radio...it's "TV on the Radio." And I'm not a hipster and I also listen to tons of top 40 stuff.

I love TVOTR's cover of the Pixies' Mr. Grieves. Here it is, over a sort of random painting montage (thanks youtube):

I've seen them on a few

I've seen them on a few shows this week and I have found them completely annoying and untalented. It seemed like noise. I'm 27.. I'm not old.. not yet any how and I felt completely lost by what ever it was that they were trying to accomplish.

and I too am a faithful SNL watcher.. Andy Samberg and Kristen Wigg are hilarious
