Stimulus package passed

Much of the money would go for victims of the recession in the form of food stamps, unemployment compensation and health care. There is money, as well, for construction of highways and bridges.

What worries me about this, how much of this money will be 'borrowed' from the chinese, so we can buy more chinese goods, so that our kids and our retirement will be paying for this bailout. While the direct aid to those who need it is generally a 'good thing', investing more in US and not us seems like a better long term plan. :dontknow:

I guess we all need to hope we are on the right side on the new administartion in terms of our beliefs, because now if your kids meet weekly at school for religious based activities, there is no stimulus money available for that instution..

Keep lining up to let the government dictate its own agenda to you if you take their money...

And the former administration wasn't dictating its own agenda by giving money to faith-based organizations?

No..they were just saying that if you WERE a faith-based organization, you'd get more money. But that's okay, I guess...so much for that whole separation of church and state thing.

yeah, well I guess as long

yeah, well I guess as long as the majority of people agree with it and the rest just don't bother finding out more information about it than it doesn't matter that it infringes on the rights of those in the minority,,
As long as the majority is happy though...

I hope everyone who is standing up now clapping for this never finds themselves on the other end in disagreement.. they will be the ones sctratching their heads in disbelief saying when did my government decided this was o-k, I don't agree with this,,
But it has been my sad realization that as long as it doesn't affect people directly they have not problems with it..

Taking rights away from other Americans, imposing guidelines on how they run their businesses, going into their homes and taking their legal firearms in America?? Well, I disgaree with all that anyway, so its o-k if the government does it?

Just scary..

Glad to see that the Democrats are making sure all of the really, really important issues are being pushed to the front of the helm. Shame on you, Arlen Specter.

I think the characterization

I think the characterization of some people as standing and clapping/cheering for this package is a little over the top. No one, even the supporters of this measure, is excited about it. I don't want to see this happen, but I also don't see much of an alternative.

"Speaking at the FBR Capital

"Speaking at the FBR Capital Markets conference in New York in December, Walter M. Pressey, president of Boston Private Wealth Management, a healthy bank with a mostly affluent clientele, said there were no immediate plans to do much with the $154 million it received from the Treasury.

“With that capital in hand, not only do we feel comfortable that we can ride out the recession,” he said, “but we also feel that we’ll be in a position to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves once this recession is sorted out.”

The bankers’ comments, while representing only a random sampling of the more than 200 financial institutions that have received TARP money so far, underscore a growing gulf between public expectations for how the $700 billion should be used and the decisions being made by many of the institutions that have taken part. The program does not dictate what banks should do with the money."

I think there are still two

I think there are still two versions of this bill to get reconciled (Senate and House, which is slightly larger), so if you're looking for your particular ripoff to get funding, you still have to keep checking on it.

The alternative is throw the thing away and start again and this time develop a package that actually will work..
This should not be a hard thing for Obama to pass, everyone, Democrats and Rebulicans, want this, but it needs to stay true to its intended purpose..

How does 4.1 Billion dollars for ACORN help the economy??
Really, How, I know little about the group, what it does, etc.. How does that help?

Also, the $ ear marked for STD's, yes, I actually agree, that is needed, but not part of a stimulus package..

It is at almost a Trillion

It is at almost a Trillion dollar now, What is America's working population? Could we all just get own own million now??, They might even get change and make $ back after the take taxes..

We could all pay off our mortgages and go on a shopping spree!

Wow. I don't think 4.1 BILLION for ACORN is in the package. I could see how that would really get you worked up if true.

I think many people who support the current administration (not necessarily this entire package of course) have spent a great deal of their lives scratching our heads in disbelief about how this country has been run.

Yea, that's what I did too. I guess my point is that it didn't seem to get the economy out of the tank.

The ATV trails are a little silly. I'm not sure exactly how that builds long term growth into the economy or fixes our infrastructure. Who knows, maybe our ATV trail infrastructure lags far behind other developed nations. It could be the next big crisis!
