first real snow accumulation of 08-09

those other two "storms" don't really count to me. this fluffy white snow was a treat. how did you all enjoy it? I had a pretty enjoyable night off. had dinner and some coffee at Rocket Cat watching the snow fall outside. continued watching the snow fall outside while enjoying some PBC Joe at Atlantis and playing some pool (got beat....grrr!) with my friend. then proceeded to ravage the pristine beauty of the freshly fallen snow in Pops Dog Park with my dog and my friend.

so if this keeps up, where are some of the best hills for sledding in the hood? where does everyone go?

I absolutely LOVE it. Yeah,

I absolutely LOVE it. Yeah, I know a lot of folks are anxious for winter to end but it isn't exactly Buffalo around here, y'know? Philly winters are pretty tame (and this is from someone who grew up in Florida) so I get a kick out the occasional "Winter Wonderland" vista and you know kids just adore it. Besides, it's forecast to be back in the 50s by the weekend so it's not like any of us will be speaking in Inuit and traveling by sled dog.

By the way, for those who HATE the cold you may as well avoid Florida the next few days, too. Going down to freezing as far south as Miami and most of the state will be in the 20s for lows. It's not Hawaii, even though I bet of dumbfounded tourists left home without even a windbreaker. Surprise.

Speaking of which, my absolute favorite memory of being a kid in Miami was the day it snowed (January, 1977). I remember my entire middle-school just pouring outside running and screaming. It was just magical for us (maybe that's why I still like the stuff so much).

The Miami Herald has a pretty cool video retrospective of that day (link below) and as for me: LET IT SNOW!!

I love it. I live at Sepviva and Hewson and walked to Norris and Frankford. Caught the 5 bus which ran very slow, then jumped on the El to 34th street and walked to the Hosp. of the U of P. Sidewalks are looking great down here. I love the snow. Look at the trees. they are beautiful w/ the snow on them. I am working in the basement now w/ no windows. so everyone enjoy. I will when work is done at 1:30 so I can play with my 2 kiddies when I get home.. Have a great day. ENJOY!

I enjoyed watching the snow

I enjoyed watching the snow fall last night. This morning, not so much. Just finished shoveling at my house, my mom's, and my sister's houses. Thank goodness it's not too cold.

I love it. I even love shoveling. Having to go to work while my kids get to play in the snow all day, not so much!

We had a blast sledding last

We had a blast sledding last night (Ikea seat cushions make surprisingly excellent sleds). The neighborhood looked downright magical. Finally, some real snow!!!!

I shoveled two other sidewalks and from Berks to Hewson on the East side because it was so light and fluffy and rather warm with no breeze. Great workout! I did it again at midnight in my pj's and jacket!

No one was out...it was quiet and so nice.

I love it too. I was really

I love it too. I was really surprised schools were closed today, although this one was much better than last week'a storm. Wife had to work today and childcare was unavailable so I had to stay home from work today. Isn't that terrible? ...the kids and I are heading out now to play.

It's a SNOW DAY!!!!!!!!!!!

How were everyone's

How were everyone's sidewalks? I shoveled twice last night so that by 630 this morning all I had to do was salt, and cleaned my car last night so this morning I just had to do a cursory brushing. Hopefully between the sun and (soon to be) warmth this will all be a winter memory. (I'm not a fan of snow, in case you could not tell).

And, to the poster who reminisced about the snow day in Miami of January 1977 ... it used to snow a LOT in Philly, just hasn't over the past 7 or 8 winters or so.

Last time I went sledding around here, I had to go all the way up to John Byrne Golf Course at Grant and Academy.

I don't know if the backside of the railroad along Lehigh Avenue between Belgrade and Thompson is still available, but we did some serious sledding there on "Suicide Hill" back in the day. Very few of us had sleds, or anything resembling a sled, so we used what we could find laying around the nearby junkyard (e.g., a tire, a car hood). We took a pass on the cracked windshields, though.

I'm a NoYoer, so that's where we went. I'm not sure where the Fishtowners went.

What about you Roma? (Not you, Roma. The other Roma). Where did you go sledding last night?

Ooops. Sorry if I ever knocked you over coming down on a car hood. I usually aimed for the trees when I got near the bottom of the hill.

ha-ha. how strange is it that we lived within blocks of each other and never met growing up? unreal. Fishtown.us to the rescue!

Had an incident on suicide hill one time. A daredevil friend once had a tree limb impale itself through his leg on the way to the hill. It was a weird, freak accident, but that curbed our trips to the hill after that. But, good times.

I went sledding on the hill formed by the I-95 Girard Exit ramp. The access isn't exactly pedestrian friendly (or 100% legal, I think), but the hill was sweet!! I'll try to put up a picture when I get home.
