Select Brew #4 - aka "joe" is a robust coffee porter. Brewed with 50 pounds of locally roasted fair trade Peruvian coffee; this beer will make you think you are drinking a sweetened espresso.

Where. other than the brewery, can we get this brew? I tried one of your seasonals at Standard Tap. Don't recall the name but it was awesome.

was that the Philly Navidad, their dark lager made with locally grown hops? that was probably the first beer by PBC that I actually liked. makes me think that perhaps they are finally getting their stuff together and hopefully will start making some decent brews. even the Newbold is much better than that crap they were spewing out in the beginning.

anyway, been told that the Joe is pouring at the Green Rock. not sure where else.

the newbold is one of the original 4, ie. that 'crap they were spewing out in the beginning.'

(its also, in my opinion, the worst of their brews. though that is just personal opinion about what i like in an IPA, im sure)

My least favorite is the Rowhouse Red, but I'm a HUGE fan of the Walt Wit. I guess I wouldn't call ANY of them crap on a community message board, considering all that PBC does do for this community, but to each his own.

I had a couple of those Joes

I had a couple of those Joes last night at Atlantis. I've had coffee-type porters and stouts before. I hafta say that this one is definitely the best one I've had. It's got a lot of flavor, but still tastes like beer. Also, the other coffee-tasting beers I've had often have a flat taste, but this one didn't. It was rich. Also, it's not too heavy. Anyways, good stuff.

Mike and I are excited to

Mike and I are excited to try this. A beer fanatic friend of ours brought a coffee stout to New Years and we loved it. It's called Dark Lord and it's brewed by a company called Three Floyds. It's only brewed once a year and the brewery throws a heavy metal festival where they sell it. They will only allow each person to buy six bottles of it at once. Pretty crazy! It was a cool mix of coffee and molasses flavors, so I'm excited to taste PBC's take on it.

ugh! I'm so jealous of you. Three Floyds isn't distributed in PA anymore and it's near impossible to find. Dark Lord, even more so because of it's rareness and lack of availability. they have an event called Dark Lord Day at the brewery and I know people (my friend did) who come from halfway across the country just to get to that tiny little town in Indiana.

I know it's one of the original 4. and it's been very inconsistent since Day 1. this has been the primary critique of PBC, their inconsistency of their brews. the Newbold that they're putting out today is better than the Newbold that they put out on Day 1.

Yeah...Dark Lord Day was the heavy metal festival I referred to. They have heavy metal bands play while people wait to buy the Dark Lord.

DNA---since you work at PBC

DNA---since you work at PBC maybe you can come to the JB's/Standard Tap holiday party there tomorrow? If not, we're all descending upon Atlantis afterwards.

While I can appreciate your complaint, keep in mind when the management split Yards took the name AND the recipes. Beer making is a delicate science and art... PBC just went through the fine tuning that all new breweries deal with.

Plus I really am a hardcore beer drinker and I definitely have a definitive preference for some tastes... dark coffee & chocolate flavored beers make me want to ralph. :tongue6: To each his own, right?

and I'll back Lauraska on this one... PBC gives back SOOOO much. I know product is seperate from business ethos, but cmon, I really don't think anybody throws open their doors like PBC.

Glad you noticed the

Glad you noticed the twicking especially with the IPA. John, one of the brewers, recently twicked the IPA because when he first formulated it last year, certain hops which he preferred were not available to him. Now they are. He also changed the Walt Wit by moving from grapefruit peel to whole organic grapefruit.

and I appreciate your comment. I realize that the split was not pretty for anyone. I also realize that PBC got to keep the building while Yards got to keep the recipes, meaning that PBC was essentially starting from scratch. I'm entirely neutral in the split and only see it as an opportunity for Philly to grow ever more so as a city cultured in great beer. I really wish that Bill and Nancy and Tom would see it this way as well. first time I had a PBC beer was Rowhouse Red on Groundhogs Day (almost a year ago) and while I still can't stand that beer, I can honestly say that the brewery has greatly improved since then.

having said that. I did stop in Atlantis today and tried the Joe and considering that stouts/porters brewed with coffee is my favorite style of beer, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it

I wasn't crazy about any of the PBC brews at first but now the Kenzinger has a permanent spot in our fridge and I do enjoy the Wit. I just wish they made a beer that didn't add to my waistline. The muffin top is in it's third trimester. I'll be heading to Atlantis this week in hopes that the Joe is still available.

I must have missed the wheelchair post but yes....I'm fatphobic about my belly. I know you are thinking it's all about Karma. I can loose the weight but you will still be evil to the core. (wink)

Hahaha...I had wheelchair on

Hahaha...I had wheelchair on the brain because someone in my office was talking about a guy in a wheelchair who goes around suing places for handicap access violations. (This is what lawyers find interesting...jeez.)

I meant WEIGHT LOSS!!!

You are totally one of those dudes who can just stop drinking beer and eating chips and lose, like, 15 lbs, aren't you? *sigh* MEN.

I was wondering about that when I read it. Maybe you miss Thad. ;)
