bakeries in fishtown

Shovelled_Up_Dead_Corpses_Rotting_You's picture

it's one thing I still have not come across. are there any good local, neighborhood bakeries in fishtown? I'd even settle for metropolitan at this point but I'd prefer something more neighborhood oriented.

Well the lady that owned Canvas made some darn good baked goods to go with her coffee. Those baked goods can now be found at Sketch, by the way!

yeah I understand that Phyllis makes some damn fine pastries, but all I'm really looking for is a place to buy fresh baked local bread by the loaf. is that so much to ask? is there at least a good bakery somewhere in Northern Liberties?

Also, Fran's Deli will sell you the loaves of the Sarcone Rolls

Yeah...that place at 3rd and

Yeah...that place at 3rd and Brown is really good. Sorry, Shovelled, I didn't read your original post as closely as I should have...didn't realize you were looking for bread!

Its not 3rd & Brown -- its 3rd and Poplar; Kaplan's yummmmmmy.

Now, if we can only find a place that makes pastries, danish, coffee cakes. Looks like the Northeast is where I'm headed.

What's wrong with

What's wrong with Metropolitan? Their breads are delicious and they're based in Fishtown. Maybe not neighborhood oriented, but certainly local.

You can't just stop in there

You can't just stop in there & buy breads, can you? I'd love if they had a little storefront in the bakery at Marlborough & Wildey, though I think Cornerstone & Quince both also stock their breads.

Ftown66's picture

I love the Metropolitan

I love the Metropolitan bakery. I love that Garlic Parmesan bread and the walnut bread.

You could at one time but not anymore.

no beef with Metropolitan.

no beef with Metropolitan. their bread is definetely good. just looking for something more neighborhood oriented, less of a corporate infrastructure.

honestly I had no idea that they were even based in FIshtown. if they had a storefront I'd be all for it.

It's only owned by two

It's only owned by two people. Not really much of a corporate infrastructure.

I could have sworn I saw a new bakery on Girard not long ago. I think it's near Sketch.

There was a little bakery on Girard near Sketch,
but it came and went very quickly.

And it was more of a high-end pastry and cake kind of place,
not a bread bakery.

I think Cornerstone stocks

I think Cornerstone stocks most of their breads. Not trying to pimp Metropolitan, just wondering. They really should have a storefront at the bakery. It would only take like one person. Kaplan's always smells good when I drive buy. Their hours are wierd though.

Kaplan has great bread, (try

Kaplan has great bread, (try the black Russian bread) and some things you might not find elsewhere, like hamantaschen.

Stocks has great, great pound cake, and good snowflake rolls, but the rest of its stuff is mediocre at best.

There is a "real" bakery at Lawrence and Girard, (if your adventurous enough to travel past Front and Girard,) which sells cakes/cookies etc., but I'm not sure about bread. As with most bakeries, closed on Monday.(Killer long cream donuts.)

I remember when you could just go in the side door of Metropolitan, (on the weekends) and buy whatever they had...didn't know you couldn't do it anymore...are you sure you can't, or was the door just locked?

double post, sorry

I've been trying to find out

I've been trying to find out what the hours are for the Lawrence Street Bakery. During the summer, I passed their everyday and they were never open.

codergrrl's picture

Maybe they close for a chunk

Maybe they close for a chunk of time, like Stocks.
I imagine its tough to be a baker in July.

I haven't asked in a while, but it used to be true that Rocket Cat carried Metropolitan muffins and rolls, maybe bagels. I wonder how hard it would be to expand this to loaves of bread....

was just wasting some time

was just wasting some time on Memphis Taprooms website and came across the website of their baker. I'm surprised nobody mentioned them in this thread. not exactly what I was looking for as it seems they don't make breads, just desserts/pastries, but from the bits and pieces of desserts I've had at MTR they're fantastic!
