Some scumbag went through a package that UPS left in my door

Fortunately it was just an empty box from Microsoft that they sent me so I can send back my broken Xbox 360 for repair, but the tape on the box was completely torn off and the box was rummaged through. My gf emailed me this description of what she encountered:

"at about 1:00pm dec 3 2008, I was upstairs when I heard what i thought was my boyfriend's son trying to unlock the door coming home from school. I ran down to unlock the door for him and when I opened it I saw a white box in front of me and it was opened. I immediately looked out the door and saw a man walking very fast towards cumberland st. he looked to be about 6ft tall, 225-220 lbs, was wearing a navy blue jacket, denim jeans, and a baseball cap. I only saw him from the back. He was about a block and a half away when I saw him."

I will be contacting both Microsoft and whoever the delivery vendor was (I am assuming UPS, but will find out for sure later) when I get home from work tonight, and insisting that any packages sent to my house require a signature from someone in the residence, and not to leave any packages unattended outside my home under any circumstances.

With the holiday season underway and more and more people shopping online, I urge people to take the same preventive measures that I will be, because there's plenty of people roaming these streets that have zero reservations about going through a package they see left outside someone's house, even if it's left partially obscured in between a screen door and a storm door, as it was in my case.

Nothing can kill the holiday spirit more surely than getting ripped off. :(

DHL has a habit of leaving

DHL has a habit of leaving stuff outside, sometimes without even bothering to knock! My neighbor watched a DHL guy "deliver" a mural sized poster, in a tube, to my house, last year. She said he didn't even knock, and then he just leaned it up against the wall of the property, NEXT DOOR TO MINE, where there isn't even a house front. DHL stinks, and the other two aren't much better.

Sorry this happenned to you, Magus. I bet the dude saw Microsoft on the box and thought he'd hit the junkie jackpot. The description sounds pretty similar to the dude who likes to go around pretending that he's collecting for the rec, too.

I called Microsoft and spoke

I called Microsoft and spoke to someone named Sarah that sounded way too middle-eastern to really be named Sarah. She assured me that they will not leave a box with an Xbox 360 in it at the residence without a signature. Which is a good thing assuming that is indeed the case. But yeah, unless you actually keep up on these sorts of deliveries, there's no way of knowing that your package is safe. And there's too many people out there all too happy to take advantage of this.

Just figured I'd warn people so they have it in the back of their head when ordering stuff online this holiday season.

I think some delivery people

I think some delivery people are afraid to knock on doors in our area.

More than once I've watched as delivery guys put one of those "I missed you" stickers on our door, and leave - without ever ringing a doorbell or knocking on the door. (Although I have to admit that happened more often 6-7 years ago than it does today.)

This happened to me a couple of times with fedex while i was sitting there waiting for him because i knew it was comming that day. Never heard a knock or the doorbell ring but found the notice.

Im shocked they they just opened your box right there on your step. I would have thought that they would have just did a grab and take the box to a secluded location then open it.

DHL does suck and thats probably the reason they are closing shop on US deleveries. They lost my nephews Xbox 360 for about a month and a half before they found it then shipped it back to the shipper instead of me. The shipper shipped it to me through ups the second time around.

I always keep a baseball bat in my umbrella stand in the entryway. Your description reminds me of a junkie thats always roaming the neighborhood. I actually seen him today on tulip street about 11 am.

Probably him i would guess.

Probably him i would guess. I don't have a name but if i did i would have no problem giving it to you. It seems everywhere i drive in the neighborhood in the morning i see this guy roaming around. I see him a lot heading up palmer to over front st way and near the fishtown market area a lot. He used to hang in a bar that i frequented years ago. Just don't remember his name.

I wanted to thank everyone

I wanted to thank everyone for their helpful feedback regarding this situation. The fortunate thing for me in this case is that the box didn't have anything of value in it other than packing materials. But I wanted people to be aware of it so they can keep an eye out for any sort of scrupulous activity if they are expecting a delivery over the holidays.

After talking to Microsoft and doing my due diligence in terms of internet research, it seems pretty clear that the deliverypersons are required to get a signature when delivering a package that actually has an Xbox in it, and if they are unable to get a signature, they are to take the package back with them and are NOT to simply leave the package at the residence unattended, so that was reassuring.

Thanks again for all the feedback I received. I appreciate it.

One time my stepfather

One time my stepfather ordered a few hundred dollars worth of Swiss Army knives while he was away on vacation, and had it delivered to my house. UPS left it on the front porch. You can bet we never saw it.

Interesting... I found the

Interesting... I found the remnants of a ripped up package shipped from QVC this morning (around 8:15am) in front of my house around Cedar and Berks. It was addressed to someone who lived on Montgomery.

At first I thought some jerk opened their packaged and then just threw the trash on the ground which isn't too unbelieveable considering how much people litter in this neighborhood... But now I am wondering.

If anyone on Montgomery lost a package today I can get the remnants of it out of my trash and see if it was yours. I cleaned up after whoever threw the package on the ground. It was, however, empty.
