Book it! - Rally Monday at the Library November 10th, 6:30pm

AJThomson's picture

Many may not be aware of this, but the library is open on Monday nights until 8pm. It's a great time to go there.

Let's show our support for the staff, visit the library, perhaps take out a book or two and work on a real plan to demonstrate that we care enough to keep it.

Meet at the library at 6:30pm on Monday. We won't be blocking traffic or anything like that, but we will be using our Fishtownian spirit to come up with ideas and solid commitments from all of us as neighbors to save our library.

Some smart guy said this "I think the health of our civilization, the depth of our awareness about the underpinnings of our culture and our concern for the future can all be tested by how well we support our libraries." ~Carl Sagan, Cosmos

We will have a representative from the Free Library to explain this to us. We've contacted elected officials who have tentatively confirmed attendance. Let's get the ball rolling.

My daughter and I have a tradition of visiting the library every Monday night. I love these nights and the feeling of fostering my daughters love of books.

We will definitely be there to support these efforts. We must not let this happen.

Why does this have to be one of the first things to be cut?? Something as important as a Free Library that benefits our children so directly....

This is devastating news....

Like everyone else I am

Like everyone else I am devastated to hear about the library closing. I love that library and want to do anything I can to help keep it open. I've started a blog to keep neighbors updated about what we can do. http://savefishtownslibrary.blogspot.com/
So far I've got numbers to call and this rally listed. Please let me know if you know of other happenings to help the library.

I'll be there with hopefully

I'll be there with hopefully a good showing of folks from the Parenting Program.

It will be a rally followed by a brainstorming/planning meeting. Depending on the number for the strategy session, we may hold it in the Rec.

AJ said we only have about a month before the hearings so we need to act fast!

We're hoping to have numbers for what it cost to run not only our branch but some of the others.

There will also be a main Rally on the steps of The Central Library Dec. 6th. I don't have a specific time yet.

Main thing now is to get people out tomorrow night so we can all get in the same space (however scary that may be)make some noise, learn some specifics, make some plans and kick this into high gear.
I may have someone with a video camera to document some of this so we can YOUTUBE it.

Thanks for doing the blog, Mandy!

I was reading over the City's budgets for 2008 and the document released on Thursday...seems to me the numbers for the Water Dept are really high compared to everyone else. I wasn't really sure what I was looking at but it looked way out of proportion for all the other depts and line items. Section 3 in 2008 budget. Does it really cost that much to supply us with refreshing, sparkling, pre-medicated water? I'm not complaining...it saves me a ton on prescriptions....just curious.

I'm thinking the water dept. may have built in costs for the infrastructure. Remember many of these water/sewer lines are very old; some might be about 100 years old. Also, during the winter months, the freezing weather cause mains to break (again, the old infrastructure).

And, I'll take Philly water over Harrisburg water any day.

citidove's picture

Yes, I know that our system

Yes, I know that our system is very old and really, I do applaud the quality of the drinking water here. I'm just saying that if we're talking about needing to save money, I know there is lots of waste in so many city agencies. I just don't want us to lose anything else for the families in this neighborhood! Beside, the Water Department comes under Enterprise Funds, not general funds so they're out of the conversation anyway.

brooke's picture

I believe that was ballot

I believe that was ballot question #1, which I voted against. We're all going to filter our water anyway. Seems like a lot of money when we don't have much. Clearly libraries and fire departments are more pressing--in my mind, anyway.

Hey All,

I just contacted My Fox Philly's hotline and told them about our rally. 1-800-220-6397 Believe it or not an actual human answers the phone. I also contacted NBC 10 through an online message. I just think the more attention we can draw to this situation the better. Just thought if more of us gave a call we could really draw some attention to this issue and hopefully be able to influence Nutter and show people how unjust all these cuts are.

I distributed 100 flyers

I distributed 100 flyers around my immediate neighborhood in East Kenzo (parts of Cumberland east of Frankford, on Sergeant Street, Memphis St, parts of Firth and parts of Collins), yesterday. I got alot of response from people, most of them being parents who take their kids to the library. I hope everyone will come out.

I know this sounds bonkers,

I know this sounds bonkers, but if the city won't commit to keeping the library open on its budget, maybe the library supporters should think about looking for budget help elsewhere.

Corporations have tons of money sitting around that is already earmarked for charity, it has to go. Form a little 501(c)3, staff w volunteers, lease the building (for $1) from the city, and BAM -- the GlaxoSmithKline Library of Fishtown!

Thanks to all who came out

Thanks to all who came out tonight. I love this neighborhood.

We're working on putting the list of people together who signed up to help (some are hard to make out). If you aren't on the email chain and signed up, please don't get angry. It was a bit chaotic and we did not intentionally leave you off any lists. Your help is certainly welcomed and needed. Please check here or the Spirit and Star for updates.

Special thanks to Leo Voloshin who designed the fish for our banners and signs. Also, thanks to the Library Staff and the officers of the 26th District, who always do a great job, and Laura and Tina for bringing the hot chocolate.

I have more signs if you need them.

Again, don't forget to call and write Council and the Mayor's Offices.

We're going to tentatively schedule our strategy meeting for
Wednesday, November 19th at 7:00pm. Place TBA.
