Ekta vs. Tiffin Challenge: Official Results

ronchito's picture

so several friends of mine in fishtown decided to conduct an official Ekta vs. Tiffin Challenge to determine the best indian food option in the neighborhood. tiffin, of course, being the more experienced original restaurant and ekta being the geographically-closer upstart.

the rules:

orders were placed at the same time and the delivery option was chosen. each participant had two plates labeled #1 and #2 -- with each containing a sample of one of each item ordered. however, the items on each plate were not all from the same restaurant so they were mixed -- the restaurant source of each item was not made aware to the participants. each participant was given a scorecard and asked to select whether they preferred the #1 or #2 versions of each item. the item with the most preferred selections would be considered the winner. there were 8 participants in the study.

the results:

delivery time: 40 minutes sooner for ekta

cost: $10 cheaper for ekta

food:
- plain naan: tiffin
- onion naan: ekta
- onion bhaji appetizer: ekta
- chicken tikka masala: ekta
- saag paneer: tiffin
- chicken korma: ekta

final analysis:

ekta was preferred for 4 out of 6 dishes, was $10 cheaper, and 40 minutes quicker for delivery. it should be noted that very few of the food items were landslide victories, and several participants indicated that they would be satisfied with orders from both restaurants. however, based solely on the scientific evidence, it appears that ekta is indeed the true winner for local indian cuisine.

*i should note that i did not participate in this study due to the fact that i ate approximately 70,000 calories worth of brunch buffet only hours before the challenge began which rendered me ineligible from a ethical/human-decency standpoint. however i thought the results might still be useful to all on this msg board.

I only accept this as a valid conclusion if you were wearing a lab coat and holding a clipboard while conducting this experiment. Bonus points for safety goggles.

Ronchito, you evoke the call

Ronchito, you evoke the call for [en up dan] poster of the month status!
I think your name and/or avatar next to it, should be at the top of the screen for a month. You've perhaps provided the first interesting thread in like a year or two.

Thank you for your work here son, you're a hero, dont you forget that. You're what Sarah Palin would deem "real America".

Big hugs

I had almost the same conversation with my wife today driving past Tiffin, so it's great to see our conclusions verified here.

ha -- thanks man. but i can't take any of the credit -- the real heroes are the eight brave study participants without whom none of this would've been possible.

I would imagine that because

I would imagine that because the chef that got Tiffin its reputation, (and most of the staff), are now at Ekta, it should not have taken nine people to figure this out.
Does sound like fun....
What's the next thing your lab will be testing?

I am absolutely obsessed

I am absolutely obsessed with the Kadai Lamb and Tikka Masala from Ekta.

Overall, I end up spending mroe than I want to on dinner for 2 but it really is worth it.

I feel like the sizes vary though. One night my Kadai Lamb came in the larger containers and then another night it came in a container half the size. Anyone else experience that?
