Yes, as far as I know, the one on Girard is the only one left.
(I believe its the 300 block)
There used to be one on the corner of Dauphin and Gaul also, but thats not helping your shoes any, he's been gone for many years!

Star has limited hours now.

Star has limited hours now. I believe they're only open Tuesday - Friday.
The owners are in their 80's and close to retiring. Be prepared to drop off and come back - waiting for a repair can take a really long time. Make sure you call too if you leave shoes. They never called me to say mine were done even though they said they would.

I just got a pair of shoes

I just got a pair of shoes resoled for the first time in my life.
I had a pair that I loved and the leather was fine, but the soles were cracked in half. It was $35 to get them resoled, the shoes were $65 new. If they still made them I probably would have just ordered a new pair. It really is a dying trade. We live in a disposable world.

Yeah, but I paid $25 to have

Yeah, but I paid $25 to have a Marc Jacobs $400 pair of shoes resoled. Ones that I thought I'd die without. Star Shoe Service did a great job. I doubt there's many ladies walking around with $400 pairs of shoes on though. (For the record, I didn't pay $400...but enough to warrant the resoling.)

So dan are you telling us you have been wearing a pair of $400.00 Marc Jacobs for the past 15 years?

They are the best. My favorite guy in the neighborhood resoled a favorite pair of Via Spiga Boots about 4 times. I love those slide boots and he always said, "yes, i can do something with them." Every time, I got them back and wanted to kiss him. It would have been strange to do that so I didn't. lol. One time I took him a gucci handbag to fix. The grommets (?) on one of the straps had broken and I just wanted to see whether he could do something with it. He didn't have matching grommets so he went (at 80+ years old) to Home Depot to find something that would match. He charged me like $16 bucks. I was happy to wait the few days to get it back. LOVE this guy and will cry when he finally retires.

My sister has always wanted to go into his shop to reorganize and cubby hole organize everything. I always respond with a quick, "But how will he find anything?"

He also has deep roots in the extended neighborhood. For my NoYo friends who might remember Tony's grocery (cattycorner from Memphis Tap), his sister was Tony's wife. Tony died many many years ago and they closed the shop. She still lives there. Nunzio--do you remember Tony's?

My sentiments about him

My sentiments about him exactly. I love the sweet bickering between he and his wife...they always give you a wink after saying something sharp to one another. I want to be that in love when I'm older. You do just want to hug them!

They are so sweet. His wife was not happy that he took my handbag to fix. She wasn't in the shop when he took it. He started dickering with it right away. Apparently, his wife has been trying to get him to stick to shoes. When I came back to pick up the purse, she had a good wisecrack for him. They are too cute!
