Memphis Tap gets 2 Bells from Craig LaBan

Memphis Tap got a good review from Craig LaBan. 2 Bells. Pretty good stuff. LaBan can be a harsh critic and he had mostly positive things to say about the Tap which is great.

Memphis Taproom

Congrats to the Tap!

I cant imagine a better review actually. Any better and I'd not believe it. The flaws he picks out are so thoughtful and kind compared to what he could pick out.

I love this place and am so glad to frequent it (especially w/o Luarkas smelly mutt) but there's one criticism I'd add. Prior to every order of fish N'chips(which I hear is very good) served, the entire restaurant and bar smell of fried fish. A smell of fish always makes me weary of freshness. It's probably a ventilation issue more than anything.

Wow, great review. Thanks

Wow, great review. Thanks for posting it. I liked the last line about Kensingtonians never having to leave the neighborhood. That is rapidly becoming true.

This review brings me joy.

This review brings me joy. I'm glad he thought the Memphis Taproom was very good. Kudos to Brendan, Leigh, Jesse and the others. They're great neighbors as well.

As an old-timer, I was also happy to see the shout outs to Chug-a-Mug and Walt's. I'm also glad he got the name right (i.e., Kensington). The dude did his homework.

The only thing I didn't like

The only thing I didn't like about that review was that he dissed the desserts. Tracey at Baked is a vegan dessert genius! I haven't had a desert there that I didn't like, but I'll admit I've only had a couple.

No, I have to disagree. I am totally a dessert person, used to be a vegan who baked really great vegan desserts and routinely eat Canvas' vegan desserts. I can confirm the desserts at MT by Baked are okay but not great. Plus, they've had the same vegan chocolate cake for ages now, which is pretty dry and the outside topping doesn't blend with the inner part of the cake. And if the vegan desserts are not sublime, I sort of resent them because they're giving vegan desserts a bad name for people who may have never had them before.

I'd be overjoyed to see the Canvas vegan chocolate cupcakes there instead. Or heck, something non-vegan. Some more variety.

That's my only complaint about MT. Frankly, it's probably better for my waistline that I don't like their desserts.

Hmmm...I haven't had the chocolate cake. But I have had Baked's cupcakes (not at Memphis tap) and they were AWESOME...very moist and tasty...and the icing was...yum! I think the only two things we've had there were some other sort of cake and some mini-donuts...both were great...maybe we just missed the bad parts.

I have this feeling two

I have this feeling two bells is for a great restaurant that doesn't have all the pageantry of a super fancy restaurant. So it's pretty darn good. (I've seen excellent reviews with no cons that still got only two bells.) I have to say some of the deserts that I've had there weren't the greatest, specifically the cake and the donuts. I've had the suspicion that they keep the deserts a little longer than they should. Great baking items aren't going to be that great for more than a day.

You didn't like the donuts??

You didn't like the donuts?? I liked them! Hmph...I'm outnumbered...even by my own fiance.

As i was reading this, I thought I should add my two cents.

I deliver cakes to Memphis for dessert.
Beyond that, I have no control over how and when they are served. I am sorry to those of you who feel that you were given a sub standard dessert. I can assure you that when the cakes are delivered, they are fresh and delicious.

The donuts and cookies are not mine.

Congrats to the crew at Memphis for a stellar review!

I was surprised the beef

I was surprised the beef pasties were one of the cons- as well as the dodgers- these two items are pretty much my favorites at Memphis Tap. I can almost understand the dodgers..but the beef pasties are just plain delicious!!!

I too would also like to see more variety of dessert- especially a low calorie/low fat/but still incredibly delicious option! Think fresh fruit and some hand made whip cream...yum!

Laban gives most restaurants

Laban gives most restaurants 2 bells.
And given that he only reviews places that are supposed to be good,
2 bells is a pretty good review.
However, you need to go more with the text than the bell number.

Just went Sunday for Lunner

Just went Sunday for Lunner (meal between lunch and dinner). Had a few great local beers and some great fried comfort food. Some fried chicken finger over mac and cheese with home made bbq sauce, fried spicy onion rings.

Good service, good food, good price. Keep it up.
