Stolen Cars

phillykip's picture

So when I left my house this morning and walked across the street to get in my car, there was another car parked where I had parked mine. I scratched my head and though maybe I parked somewhere else, so I wandered around thinking I was an idiot who had just forgotten where I parked. Nunzio witnessed me in my state of confusion. I ran in to some other neighbors who confirmed that my car was parked where I remembered parking it last night. So sometime between the hours of 11pm and 8am, my car was stolen. there was no sign of any broken glass, and my car has an alarm (which i'm anal about making sure is on). so whoever stole it could've had a master key. I called ppa to make sure it wasn't just towed (although there wasn't any reason it should've been towed) and i obviously reported this to the police. the police officer said that it's getting worse and worse throughout the city.

i'm hoping that my car turns up, b/c i loved my little old car- it was perfect for me and don't wanna go through the hassle of finding another one. so if anyone sees a little older green honda civic with a university of scranton license plate cover around let me know know :)

also - just a word of warning. the police officer told to me to never leave any insurance or registration info in your car, as that's one of the first things the theives do is look for this. so if they get pulled over for something suspicious before the car gets reported, they have all your info and could just tell the cops that you lent them the car and they'd make their story more believable b/c they'd know your name and address.

So sorry to hear...

So sorry to hear... especially since we're neighbors! Just curious... did you have an alarm/security system in your car?

Can you give us the

Can you give us the particulars of your car so we can keep an eye out for it?

phillykip's picture

Yes I did have an alarm on

Yes I did have an alarm on the car - and was very particular about making sure it was always set - in fact i specifically remember making sure it was on when i got home last night.

as for the car's specifics - it's a 1999 Green Honda Civic EX, plate number EYN8293. It has a moonroof, there's a sticker in back window - on the bottom left that says UofS, and the there's a University of Scranton License plate cover on the back as well. thanks for keeping your eyes open.

When this happened to us

When this happened to us right before Christmas we were lucky enough to get it back within 24 hours- thanks to Dan and all the good people on fishtown.us that kept calling and reporting seeing it in the hood to 911.

Of course it helped the dummies that stole our car didn't leave the neighborhood with it and even came within a block of where they stole it! dumb dumb dumb.

Hopefully you will be as lucky.

Now we have a bar on the wheel as well as our alarm...I recommend that everyone get one of those locking bars for the wheel- it is a real deterrent along with the alarm.

My last car was an older

My last car was an older model Honda Civic. The cops tell me they are one of the most stolen cars for their parts. Hopefully, someone finds your car quickly and what happended to my car didn't happen to yours. My car ended up in Camden stripped for parts including the little Honda emblem on the hood.

that sucks!
Had my car stolen a couple years ago and also found it a block away two days later.
I suggest you keep scanning the neighborhood to see if you can be as lucky. I found mine with the windows open and it was unlocked. It was a miracle it wasn't stolen again.

Also, the club is a big help. I have mine now and I believe it's useful.
My car was an old neon,... who steals this crap?

good luck.

Have you checked around the corner? With the price of gas i'm sure they won't get to far. Stupid fact: Hondas are the number one stolen car in Canada. Any shifty Canadians living nearby? It also is in the top ten on the american list. Yes that even includes older model like yours. This is the reason i will not buy one.

I have been using a brake lock for years. A club like device that locks to the break pedal. Simple to use and ten time harder to remove then a steering lock. They can cut the steering wheel with a hacksaw and thats it. With the brake lock you would need to cut off the brake and that would be kinda stupid. You wouldn't be able to drive it. Won't stop a flatbed towtruck from stealing your car though.

Sorry to hear bout that. I don't know what is going on up here in Cione lately, but it is getting out of control. There have been 3 more houses robbed since mine was just 2 weeks ago!

I finally got a rental car (apparently there was some mad rush and no one had any cars available) and drove around a little bit to see if my car showed up, but no luck. i'm still keeping my fingers crossed that it shows up. thanks everyone for keeping your eyes open.

Stolen cars used to turn up

Stolen cars used to turn up frequently under I-95 on Columbia and on Shackamaxon and on the 300 block of Richmond St. Some had been stolen from the neighborhood and would come and go, even for days after they were reported by neighbors as suspicious and probably stolen,(so it seems somebody was using them after they were stolen). You may want to look in that area.
I would take a look myself but I moved away.
Good luck, I hope you find your car.

Recently, while walking the dog I found a car sitting on a lot in an area close by...called police and it was stolen.I had a 77 Monte that was stolen a few years back. The police had it listed on the hot sheet but it was one of my friends who spotted my car on the 1100 block of Palmer Street.I got the car back minus my mags, radio and speakers......like you my car was parked by my house. The final outcome was after going to court several times the two fellows who stole my car got off scott free and never paid any restitution.Ilost several days pay and all they lost was sleep.....so much for our legal system.Your best bet is to get the word out on the street.I will keep an eye out for your car as well as talk to some of the local bad boys and see what they have to say.Good luck on finding your vehicle.
I have been told that stealing gas is on the uprise ,especially in the Cione area......time to purchase a locking gas cap

It's these damn junkies. I seen a one of the local junkies walking around with a pair of bolt cutters the other night. I called the 26th and never heard back from them. These people are getting bigger balls by the day. It sucks, I have lived here my whole life and sometimes I really want to move.

Just wanted to update - I

Just wanted to update -
I found out this morning (via the insurance claim company) that my car was recovered the day after it was stolen. It was found in Camden, with the engine and transmission ripped out, fluids leaking, ignition busted, undercarriage damaged, smelling of gasoline and everything in the car thrown around. Why it took a week for me to find out, and why I found out via the insurance folks - don't ask me. So looks like i'm going to have to go find a new car this weekend. Again - i just wanted to thank everyone for your help.

What a bunch of ijits. I am so sorry for your poor little car - I know you loved it. Were you able to recover any of your personal belongings? I can't believe it took them a week to get back to you!

Good luck with the new car!

So sorry about your car. Sounds very similar to what happened to mine. I went over to the junk yard where they towed my car to in Camden and was able to recover some of my personal belonging including some family photos that I foolishly left in my car. I won't ever leave anything precious in my car again.

Good luck.

yeah - don't know why it

yeah - don't know why it took that long to notify me. everyone was pointing the finger and passing blame. fortunately i didn't keep much in the car, we had learned when some things were stolen from my husband's car years ago not to really keep anything in there. we got back a sirius antena (they probably didn't realize it was in the car b/c of how it was set up), a pair of flip flops and some mad libs (from our last little road trip - although they ended up getting thrown out b/c they reeked of gasoline). they did make off with a tennis raquet, what was really the only item over $10 - although somehow i don't expect that they're gonna be using it to volley on the courts anytime soon. this has been just a whole new learning experience. :(

My mother car was stolen a

My mother car was stolen a few years back and it was found in media pa and it was there for about a month before someone called her. Someone stole her car then used the car as security to test drive a motorcycle someone was selling in a personal ad and they never returned with the bike. Guy gave the man a set of keys that weren't really for the car since he broke the ignition and the guy let him take the bike for a test ride.

My late Honda Civic suffered

My late Honda Civic suffered a similar fate.... they guy at the place where it was towed responded to my inquiry with "you mean what used to be a "Honda Civic" I try to comfort myself with the thought that the many parts removed er stripped from my little Honda have brought new life to many other Hondas..... That was the first and last new car I will probably ever own... although it was 5 when it was stolen... and this happened in the golden perfectly run crime-free metropolis of New York City. I am hoping nobody wants my current rides a 19yo 4dr sedan and a 14 yo PU truck that I can barely start

My friend lost her Honda Civic here in Fishtown...and it was found at 4th and Westmoreland as a torched shell of her former car. I think it too was around 5 or 6 years old and of course, had just finished paying it off.

This is why I always use

This is why I always use 'The Club' with my Vauxhall Belmont.

(didn't 'Vauxhall Belmont' appear as an extra---usually a snooty, pompous butler---in a lot of 1930s romantic farces?)
